Munster Rugby & UCC Physical Education Initiative
27th September 2013 By Munster Rugby
Munster Rugby have recently completed a two week programme in conjunction with UCC’s Physical Education Department to help deliver their new Fundamental Movement Module.
The module is a new initiative designed to identify the importance of FMS and its development through physical education.
Munster Rugby Strength and Conditioning Education Officer Feargal O’Callaghan along with Rugby Development Officers Keith Murphy and Ultan O’Callaghan were on hand to deliver the FMS content to UCC students which identifies generic development in this key area.
The module which is mainly practical based offered the students an opportunity to teach activities and techniques to their peers and develop fundamental movement which included basic skills of jumping, landing, throwing, catching, running, etc. Munster Rugby incorporated many of its teachings on the IRFU and IRB training programmes which are very generic to all sports.
Students will continue with this module for another four weeks with emphasis being placed on developing fundamental movement skills in other sporting codes. They will also utilise these learnings in placement activities post Christmas for their personal development.
Munster Rugby would like to thank Fiona Chambers (Director of Sports Studies and Physical Education) and UCC for inviting Munster Rugby to participate in this module.
