Munster Schools Update

Schools PRO Maurcie Hartery reflects on last weeks competitive action across the province.

The Barry Cup (U19) began this week. This is a B Competition for Schools at an Under 19 (Senior Cup) level. This comprises of mostly B sides from A schools but also is open to B schools to compete. In the only quarter final down for decision in the competition, C.B.C and P.B.C met in Lansdowne on Monday. It was the side from the Mardyke that sealed their place in the semi final versus Midleton College with a 16 – 3 win. Villiers and St. Munchins College will clash in the other semi final.

The O’Brien Cup (U19 C Schools Competition) continued this week with two matches to be played. Tarbert CS and Mount Mercy Hawk met in the first round. The first of the quarter finals also took place with Waterpark College meeting Abbey CBS in Waterford. At the time of writing we have not received any results.

There were three senior friendlies played this week. St. Munchins met Gonzaga on Wednesday in UL. It was the Leinster school who prevailed on a scoreline of 32 – 10. Glenstal hosted St. Michael’s also on the artificial surface on Friday evening. St. Michael’s won a captivating game 47 – 21. Castletroy hosted Blackrock College on Saturday in Castletroy. It was the Leinster Senior Cup favourites, Blackrock, that proved far too strong winning 34 – 5.

At junior level, Castletroy College travelled to Wilton on Saturday morning to meet P.B.C. It was the Cork side that prevailed, in miserable conditions, on a scoreline of 15 – 0. St. Munchins hosted Kilkenny College for two matches in the Corbally venue. It was St. Munchins that won both games but I do not have the scores of the game.
