Munster Schools Update

Schools PRO Maurcie Hartery reflects on last weeks competitive action across the province.

The Bowen Shield (U18) was back in action this week with four games in Round 4 taking place.

The big two in Cork, CBC and PBC, proved too good for Ard Scoil Rís and St. Clements respectively. CBC ran out easy winners 59 – 10 in Lansdowne, while PBC were comfortable 39 – 10 winners in Wilton. Castletroy maintained their 100% start to the competition with a dramatic 22 – 19 victory over St. Munchins in Castletroy. St. Munchins looked in control for large periods but two tries in the final two minutes meant Castletroy came away with the victory.

The McCarthy Cup (U15) kept on moving into Round 5 with a heavyweight tie between CBC and PBC the major attraction of the fixtures. In a very close fought tight battle, it was PBC who came out on top with 7 -5 win in Wilton. Bandon and Glenstal played out a very high scoring entertaining game in Bandon with Bandon coming out victorious with a 32 – 24 victory. Rockwell were far too strong for a disappointing St. Clements with a 57 – 12 win away in Limerick. Crescent ousted Ard Scoil Ris in a very tight affair, prevailing 10 – 5 in the North Limerick venue, with goalkicking proving the difference after each side scored one try each. On Friday, St. Munchins and Castletroy met in Castletroy with the visitors coming out on top with a 19 – 12 victory over the home side.

In the "B" section Crescent Comp. completed the McCarthy Cup double over Ard Scoil with a comfortable 29 – 0 victory. CBC gained some revenge over PBC by winning a high scoring game 38 – 26 in Wilton. Castletroy and Munchins played out an enthralling 35 – 35 draw in Friday’s only game in this Section.

In Limerick, the Senior (U19) and Junior (U16) City Cups entered the closing stages of the competition, with the top 2 from the league section entering the respective finals. In the Senior section there will be a winner takes all match next week as Ard Scoil Ris setup a mouth-watering clash with Castletroy by comfortably seeing off St. Munchins College 41 – 24 in Corbally. Next weeks match will decide who plays Glenstal in the final as their flying start to the season continued, finishing the league section with a 100% record after defeating Crescent 25 – 12.

The Junior section had a much more exciting final round of games as 3 schools were vying for a place in the top two, Crescent, St. Munchins and Glenstal. St. Munchin’s booked their place in top spot and hence a place in the final with a comprehensive 38 – 7 victory over Ard Scoil Ris. This meant the other match in the competition became a winner takes all between Crescent and Glenstal Abbey. It was Crescent who punched their final pass with a 36 – 7 victory in the County Limerick venue. Like the Senior competition, the final will take place next Wednesday, and also the two finalists met in Round 1 of the league phase with St. Munchins coming out on top 33 – 10.

In other friendly games around the province, PBC were far too strong for Villiers, with the Cork school beating the Limerick school 64 – 0 at Senior level. In another Senior friendly Castletroy College beat Rockwell 22 – 3. At Junior level, CBC had a clean sweep against Rockwell, winning the “A” match 29 – 19, and the “B” match 40 – 12, while Castletroy beat Villiers 42 – 19. At U14 level, St. Munchins and Ard Scoil Ris had two very close battles with Munchins winning the “A” game 12 – 5, while the two sides could not be separated in the “B” match, with the two sides playing out a very entertaining 22 all draw. At the same level in Tipperary, CBC saw off the home side Rockwell with a 25 – 10 win.

This week sees the start of the Junior and Senior Cup Qualifying with Villiers taking on CBS Sexton Street in Coonagh in both competitions. The Junior Cup game between the two schools takes place on Tuesday 20th October with a 2pm Kick Off, while the Senior Game takes place on Friday 23rd October with a noon Kick Off.
