11th June 2012 By Munster Rugby
Munster Rugby were well represented on the Women’s International Sevens stage this weekend where Ireland were competing at the FIRA/AER European Women’s Championship in Ghent.
Six Munster players were involved in the side that won the title with an unbeaten run without conceding a point throughout the tournament.
Following wins over Czech Republic, Belgium, Poland and Israel in the group stages, they defeated Georgia 51-0 before recording a comprehensive 29-0 victory over Scotland in the final.
Speaking about the tournament, head coach Jon Skurr said, “I am extremely happy with the girls' performance here this weekend.
"We set ourselves a goal at the beginning of this programme to qualify for Moscow and recently set ourselves a target of winning this tournament which we have been successful in.
"The determination, commitment and skill level of the players must be commended and to go through a tournament with no points conceded is very impressive. We'll now look forward to Moscow and hopefully continue with the success that the ladies have achieved so far."
The side which is managed by former Munster Rugby Women’s Development Officer and Munster Representative, Gemma Crowley, now progress to the final European qualifying tournament in Moscow from June 28th – July 1st. From this, the top five teams will advance to the World Championships in 2013.
