Munster Rugby Under 16 and Under 17 Summer Development Programmes culminated this week with a series of matches home and away.

The Munster Under 16 players finished with two blitzes in UL Bohemians RFC and CIT respectively, whilst the Under 17 programme concluded with games against the Leinster and Connacht.

See highlights below

In a busy summer for the Under 17 set-up, their training programme incorporated both club and schools’ squads who trained during July and August. The programme focused on developing the players’ core technical, tactical, physical, mental and lifestyle capacities within a 3-day programme of Education, Strength & Conditioning, and Rugby sessions.

The squads trained in UL and CIT developing their core technical competencies based on the fundamentals of tackle technique, catch/pass, breakdown and continuity.

Both sides completed their programme playing development games against their provincial counterparts.  These included a blitz in Athlone with Connacht and Ulster also taking part as well as competitive fixtures against Leinster and Connacht.

The U16 programme involved four regional development centres incorporating players from both clubs and schools. The programme focused on developing the players’ core skills of the game while also educating them on the fundamentals of S&C training.

Their seven week programme finished up by taking part in two blitzes giving them the opportunity to showcase their progressions and skill transferability from the summer programme.

Munster Rugby would like to thank all the centres for use of their facilities and also the coaches, parents and the players for their efforts and sacrifices during this programme.

Speaking at the end of the programme Munster Coach Development Manager and Programme Coordinator Keith Murphy said “Once again the Summer Development programme for Under 16 and U17 players proved very successful.

“The commitment and sacrifice of the players was exemplary and we are very satisfied with their development, progression and application.”

“The key focus of the summer was the development of player capacities, in particular the core skills of the game and it was very satisfying to witness these skills transferring in the end of summer matches.”

“We wish all players every success in the new season with their club or school and hope they will integrate their learning from the summer programme as part of their continuous development.”

“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the coaches within the respective centres for their commitment and dedication.”
