Munster Under Age Finals
16th March 2012 By Munster Rugby
It is a busy time for the Munster Under Age with four finals all sponsored by Avonmore SuperMilk down for decision in the next thirteen days.
First up is the Avonmore SuperMilk Munster Youths Under 17 Final between Kanturk and Bruff on St. Patrick’s Day at Musgrave Park with a 1.15 kick off.
Both sides have come through their sections with impressive records. Bruff defeated Dungarvan 50-0, Killarney 52-0 and Clonakilty 20-0 to reach the knock out stages where they defeated holders Waterpark 6-3 in the quarter finals and were very impressive winners over Sunday’s Well 32-14 in the semi finals.
Kanturk defeated Ennis 15-10, Clonmel 32-7 and Listowel 50-0 to reach the last eight. They defeated Tralee 9-8 in the quarter final and again had had a narrow 13-11 win over Highfield in the semi final.
Both sides deserve their place in the decider with Bruff probably starting as favourites to win the trophy.
On Monday next holders Rockwell College and St. Munchin’s College will contest the 104th final of the Avonmore SuperMilk Munster Schools Senior Cup at Thomond Park at 3pm..
Rockwell will be appearing in their fourth successive final having lost to CBC in 2009, PBC in 2010 and last season defeated the Mardyke College.
Rockwell will be going for back to back titles and the only time they achieved this was in 1914- 1915 all though they have won three in a row on three previous occasions 1910-1912, 1928-1930 and 1959-1961.
Munchin’s will be going for their sixth title, four of them won since 2002.
It should be close and if Rockwell can hold their own up front then they could be bringing the trophy back to Tipperary,
On Saturday 24th March, Bandon and Shannon-St. Mary’s will contest the Avonmore Supermilk Munster Youths Under 19 League Final at CIT with a kick off at 1.30.
Bandon topped their section to qualify for the quarter finals with victories over St. Senan’s 22-17 and holders Waterpark 10-7 and received a walk over from Castleisland. They defeated Kanturk 35-3 in the quarter final and Garryowen 14-0 to book a final place.
Shannon-St. Mary’s a combination side of these parish clubs had big wins in their section defeating Nenagh Ormond 22-0, Young Munster 48-5 and Kanturk 48-3.
Things were not as easy in the knock out stages as they beat holders Waterpark 15-10 and then travelled to Woodleigh Park to defeat Highfield 19-10.
Shannon-St. Mary’s will start as slight favourites but Bandon showed their qualities with that fine victory at Dooradoyle and there should be little between them at the finish.
The fourth final is the Avonmore SuperMilk Munster Schools Junior Cup Final on Wednesday 28th March between C.B.C. and Ardscoil Ris at Musgrave park with a 3.00 kick off.
Both of these sides were very impressive in their semi-final victories. Ardscoil Ris defeated P.B.C. 8-3 at Musgrave Park, thanks to a late try by Kelvin Browne.
Ben O’Callaghan was Christians’ hero in their 26-9 win over Castletroy College at Dooradoyle.
