Munster Women to Play in Thomond Park in Heineken Cup Day Double Header
8th October 2009 By Munster Rugby
The Munster Rugby Women’s senior team will open this years Interprovincial Championship in Thomond Park on October 17th. This is the first ever outing for the Munster Women in Thomond Park and creates even more history as it is the first double header with the men’s senior team.
The men’s team will take on Benetton Treviso in their first home Heineken Cup match of the season at 1.35pm and the Munster Women take on Ulster at 5.30pm.
The Munster women will be looking for all support on the day as they open their Interprovincial series and are asking supporters to stay and enjoy the game after the Heineken Cup match.
Alternatively come along to Thomond Park after the Munster Treviso tie, with gates open from 4.30pm and entry via gates 8 and 9 in the East Stand, with free admission.
The women women have been training together since mid July and are heading into this season in a bid to retain the IRFU Women’s Interprovincial Title for the fourth consecutive season.
Speaking of the campaign to date, Head Coach Fiona Steed said, "Our pre-season has gone really well, with the added trip to France a real bonus in terms of player and squad development. There is still a lot to cover before we meet Ulster in Thomond Park but both the backroom team and players are putting maximum effort in.
The standard of the inter-pros and indeed women’s rugby in Ireland has been improving year on year and I think we will face tough competition from the other three provinces in our bid to defend our title and hopefully continue our unbeaten run."
The Munster women who have already defeated French Division 2 side Villelongue and French Division 1 Champions Montpellier in their pre-season tour are looking forward to their opening game against Ulster and their first ever opportunity to play in Thomond Park.
Captain Joy Neville thinks that “It will be one of the greatest honours to play in Thomond Park representing Munster and we are certainly very excited about this opportunity. After all our hard work to date, I’m really looking forward to playing together as a team and putting what we have been practising on the training pitch into action, to provide a good performance and entertain the crowd with our style of rugby.”
Make sure to be apart of creating history for the women’s game and come out to support the Munster Women in Thomond Park!
