Munster Youths Rugby Update

We take a look at Munster’s Under 16 and Under 18 youth leagues which this season have undergone significant changes to previous years.

This season see’s clubs competing not in their regional leagues and instead compete across six ranking leagues before Munster Youths Cup/Shield and Bowl competitions after Christmas which will culminate in provincial finals to be played in March 2016.

At Under 18 level in Conference One after two rounds three clubs remain unbeaten. Both of last seasons Under 18 Munster finalists, Bruff and Newcastle West-Estuary, are looking strong in this group and they join Tralee to be undefeated following the opening two rounds of games. Tralee have defeated Abbeyfeale and Killarney-Castleisland so far with the game against the Killarney-Castleisland game being a particularly close affair with the Tralee side coming away with a narrow 16-13 win. Both Bruff and Newcastle West-Estuary have started the new season in very impressive fashion and have been comprehensive winners in each of their games to date.

In Conference Two Skibbereen and Kinsale are yet to taste defeat with this seasons Munster U18 Clubs captain David McCarthy helping his club to a strong start to their season. Bantry Bay lead the chasing pack with two victories to their name from three games with the rest just behind. In the Third Conference two of the three unbeaten sides to date are the amalgamation sides of Old Crescent-St Senans and Presentation-Richmond and they are joined at the top of the table by Ennis.

In Conference Four Killorglin, Muskerry and Charleville lead the way with Mallow, who lost narrowly 11-8 to Muskerry at the weekend, next in the standings. Dolphin and Sundays Well top Conference Five after three wins from the opening three rounds with Cashel and Thurles just behind after defeats to Dolphin and Sundays Well respectively. Both of last seasons Under 16 finalists have started this season at under 18 very well with Dungarvan and Waterpark both at the top of the table with three wins from three games. Cobh Pirates and Midleton are next in line.

At Under 16 level In Conference One Bruff and Richmond-Shannon-St Marys both lead the way with Bruff undefeated after four rounds of games and The city combinations side sole defeat in their opening four games coming against the league leaders in the second round of games on a score line of 34-17. There is no full round of fixtures in this conference for a fortnight as some clubs catch up on games not played over the opening weeks of the season.

After four rounds of games in Conference Two Ballincollig and Skibbereen are top unbeaten with Ballincollig having played one game more than Skibbereen. Cork Constitution are next in the standings with their sole defeat coming against Conference leaders Ballincollig. In Conference Three Ennis and Nenagh Ormond are both unbeaten with the side from the Banner county ahead due to having played a game more.

Cobh Pirates lead Conference Four following four wins from their opening four games. Sundays Well have also not been defeated yet but have played one game less. They are level on points with Bandon who have three wins from their four games played with their solitary defeat coming last weekend when they lost 6-0 to the Conference leaders.

Tralee lead the way in Conference Five with four wins from four with Abbeyfeale, Killorglin and Kanturk next in the standings. Cashel and Midleton are tied at the top of Conference Six with four wins to date, champions in this age group for the past two seasons Waterpark are third with two wins from their opening three wins with a 22-12 defeat to Fethard in round 2 sandwiched between victories against Mitchelstown and Youghal.
