Newcastle West RFC Club Welfare Officer, John Hennessy, was awarded an inaugural Irish Rugby ‘Spirit of Rugby’ award at last weekend’s NatWest 6 Nations game against Italy in the Aviva Stadium by President of the IRFU, Philip Orr.

The Irish Rugby Spirit of Rugby programme aims to support players, coaches, volunteers and parents within the game and to educate them about their rights and responsibilities on and off the field.

The Irish Rugby Football Union is fully committed to ensuring the highest possible safeguarding standards, in line with legislation and national guidance as per the IRFU’s Safeguarding policy and Club Action Plan.

As well as his valuable contributions to IRFU safeguarding training and seminars, John has been active in ensuring coaches and volunteers have received all necessary safeguarding training within his own club.

He has implemented IRFU safeguarding policies and made these known to club members so that a safe and fun environment is put in place across the club.

John is efficiently implementing the IRFU Club Action Plan for safeguarding, making the club a model of good practice for others clubs in the area.
