Kilfeacle overcome Crosshaven in the league.

After our last win in the league “The Boys in Blue” were at home again facing a Crosshaven side that we narrowly defeated this year in the Challenge Cup quarter final on Sunday the 4th of October.
On Sunday the 29th of November at Morrissey Park, a large crowd of Kilfeacle and District supporters had gathered to cheer on their team. The game started in sunshine but with a cold strong wind that blew across the pitch and slightly favoured Kilfeacle in the first half. The temperature was bitterly low and this would have an impact on the game as handling skills were hampered and the game disjointed. In the opening quarter, both sides warily probed and searched for openings. Crosshaven knew that a win against Kilfeacle was vital, to help them climb the League one table, and Kilfeacle knew that a win was vital for them to keep their chances of winning the league alive. However Crosshaven were to meet against an ever-improving Kilfeacle side and a pack that was to be reckoned with on the day. Kilfeacle were trying to take advantage of both being at home and playing with the wind however a very strong Crosshaven pack were keeping the ball tight with some very impressive rucking and mauling. Kilfeacle and District, the small club with the big heart defended with all their mite and earned a penalty after 20 minutes but the swirling wind pushed Shane Luby’s attempt to the right and wide. Five minutes later Crosshaven also had a long range penalty attempt which too missed the mark. It was always going to be a tight game with scoring chances at a premium but it was Kilfeacle that started to impress in the latter stages of the half the combination of Jack O’Sullivan, Mark Bourke, John Keehan,Charles Walshe, Darren Lowry, Shane Luby and Stephen Touhy in the backs putting together some fine breaks. While the pack consisting of Liam O’Gorman, Damien Gavin, Noel Leahy, Shane Casey, Sean Leahy, Stephen Flood, Alan O’Mahony and James Mullane worked tirelessly for the team. On the 40th minute mark Shane Looby made up for his early miss after Kilfeacle worked field position and scored a well-taken penalty. The half-time score line read 3-0 to the homeside.
Crosshaven started the second half and immediately had a penalty attempt which fell just short of its target. Anxious moments followed for the home supporters, of which there was a sizeable amount, as Crosshaven after 14 minutes built up multiple phases of play to find themselves only metres from the Kilfeacle line. However the defence stood strong and were not to be breached on the day. This was the closest Crosshaven were to come to scoring. The home supporters feared that the Kilfeacle resistance might crumble however Crosshaven’s supreme effort had, in fact, the opposite effect and galvanised the Kilfeacle team into a unit as they went in search of a tangible response. After 10 minutes of concerted and constructive pressure “The Boys in Blue” notched up 3 more points on the board with a well-taken penalty after 31 minutes, by Shane Looby, that had the scoreboard reading 6 points to 0 in favour of the homeside. Crosshaven are a resilient outfit and did not let this impact on their game plan and came back at Kilfeacle immediately but were met with a stout defence that was well marshalled and disciplined in particular by Shane Flavin who had now come on as a substitute and Shane Casey, who put in a man of the match display to prove he has a Kilfeacle heart in his hulking frame. The pack consisted of not men but “Titans” with towering displays by Scall O’Mahony, James Mullane, Liam O’Gorman, Sean Leahy, Noel Leahy and Stephen Flood. The final whistle came and the home side celebrated their hard fought but deserved victory. The display that the Kilfeacle team gave during this game and the manner in which they played could be measured by the applause they received from both sets of supporters and their opponents as the wearily made the way of the pitch.
Kilfeacle would like to thank everyone from Crosshaven RFC who travelled on the day and wish the club the best for the rest of the season. Our next league game is a tough away game to Thurles RFC on the 6th of December. The team as ever are proud and humbled by the amount of support they receive and hope that their supporters will continue to come along and support the “Boys in Blue”.

Terrace tickets are still available for the forthcoming Heineken Cup pool games between Munster and Perpignan on December 11th and Munster versus Northampton on the weekend of January 15th/16th/17th. It is advisable to purchase tickets for both games to avoid disappointment.

Under 19s Cobh 17pts Sundays Well 29pts
The U19 got a moral boosting victory over the Pirates last Saturday in Cobh, the Well won the toss and decided to play down the hill in the first half and soon got on the score board with a hat trick of try’s from winger Stuart O Riordan and one each from Ronan Humphreys and David Ring and two conversions from out half Eoin Philpott to leave the score 29 nil at half time. The second half started with Cobh doing all the attacking but the Well defence keep them out for twenty minutes however Cobh did finally get some scores on the board to leave the score 17-29 at the end. However this was a good workout for the Well who travel to Fermoy next weekend and if they come away with a win they will have a home semi final to look forward to.

Shannon Notes Weekending December 5th 2009
Without a competitive fixture, the seniors went to Fitzgerald Park to play Thomond in a very worthwhile challenge game ahead of the resumption of the AIB league this Saturday. As usual Thomond provided stiff opposition and it was easy to see why they are going so well this season. Several of our U/21 players made their senior debut and all acquitted themselves very well. It certainly keeps the more experienced players on their toes when they see the talent coming through. In the end we ran out comfortable enough winners, but given the fact that both sides used their panels throughout the game the scoreline mattered little. It seems quite a while since we had that great win in Blackrock , but I know that the attitude of intent is still intense within the squad and with our long standing nemeses Cork Con travelling to Coonagh on Saturday, we’ll need every one in the right frame of mind. This season’s earlier result in Cork between the sides still plays on the mindset a little and the resolve to make things right is strong and it’s hard to see either side win by the 19 point margin we had that day. Kickoff is at the usual 2.30.
The seconds continued their excellent form and ratcheted up another win in the league. After the previous week’s victory over Garryowen the lads were eager to maintain that form and their performance against a very strong Young Munster side ensured such an occurrence. Bolstered by several U/21 players that were without a game at the weekend, they produced a four try performance that sees them well placed to secure a playoff spot. The bitter cold didn’t affect the players too much, which couldn’t really be said for the hardy supporters of both sides, and it was a fairly lively game with little in the difference up to the half time break. The kicking talents of Ben Sergeant were called into play throughout the game and he landed some real beauties. Prop Killean O’Neill followed a penalty by Ben with a rampaging 25 meter dash to the line and the response from Young Munster prior to the break was 2 penalties. That however was as close as the sides got as we took control of the game in the second half. Fiach O’Loughlin marked his welcome return to action after a lengthy injury with two tries in quick succession and then the bonus try came from the speedy Craig O’Hanlon. These tries were punctuated with more mercurial kicking from Ben who all added up to the final score of 33-11. Next up for the seconds on Sunday is a trip to Bruff with a 2.30 start.
The U/21’s, Thirds and Women had no games last weekend, but all return to action this week. The U/21’s head to Galwegians hoping to pick up where they left off in the South-western conference of the AIL on Saturday. The thirds are also unbeaten in the Gleeson league and will hope to keep that particular record intact when Old Crescent come to Coonagh on Saturday at 1pm. The Women take on Thurles away from home on Sunday.
Underage was once again decimated but hopefully the following fixtures will go ahead this Sunday
