Newtown win Mungret Cup
26th March 2009 By Munster Rugby
Midleton College’s reign as Mungret Cup holders for the past three years came to an end at Clonmel; when Newtown School made amends for their defeat in the previous two finals with a deserved 15-8 victory.
Playing into wind in the opening half Midleton opened the scoring after twenty minutes when good work in the pack led to second row Charlie O’Sullivan touching down.
The Waterford side hit back and eventually Morgan McCormack found a gap in the Midleton defence to score under the posts and Eoin O’Connor converted. A penalty on the stroke of half time by O’Connor had Newtown 10-5 in front.
Twelve minutes into the second half Daniel Pim extended Newtown’s lead with a try and they looked in complete control until Colin O’Brien kicked a penalty for Midleton approaching the final minute of normal time.
Midleton did launch a late assault to try and draw level but Newtown held out for a famous victory.
