ODM Financial Munster Senior Cup Roundup

Holders Young Munster were knocked out by U.L. Bohemian, as Bruff edge past Shannon and Highfield see off Thomond in extra time.

These were the headlines after this weekends ODM Financial Munster Senior Cupfirst round ties.

U.L. Bohemian 27 Young Munster 20
In a thrilling game at Annacotty, holders Young Munster lost their title. It was nip and tuck all the way with the sides tied 17-17 each at half time. Dave Moloney and Cian Ahern scored tries for the home side and Stuart O’Flanagan converted both and also added a penalty. Liam Og Murphy and Darragh Payne scored tries for the visitors and Willie Staunton converted both and also kicked a penalty. O’Flanagan and Staunton exchanged penalties after the break and a second try by Ahern which O’Flanagan converted sent U.L. through to the last eight.

Bruff 21 Shannon 14
There was a big surprise in the opening round at Kilballyowen Park when Cup specialists in the competition, Shannon, were dumped out by Bruff who had tries by Brendan Deady and John Shine, one of which Brian Cahill converted and he also landed three penalties. Fergal Walsh and Dan Heffernan scored tries for the visitors and David O’Donovan kicked two conversions.

Nenagh Ormond 3 Cork Constitution 36
Cork Constitution continued their good run with a deserved away win over Nenagh Ormond. Darragh Lyons opened the scoring with a try after five minutes, David Delaney replied with a penalty for the home side three minutes later to leave it 5-3 at half time.
Constitution extended their lead ten minutes into the second half with a try from Sean Scanlon and Richard Lane converted. Lane added a try of his own which he also converted minutes later. Simon Zebo added two tries in between one from Brian Hayes, one of which Lane converted.

Dolphin 48 Sunday’s Well 6
The gulf between the top flight and the Third Division was quite apparent at Musgrave Park when Dolphin beat neighbours Sunday’s Well. The ‘Well raced into an early 6-0 lead with two penalties from Danny O’Shea but tries from Brian Dennehy, Cian Bohane, Chris Lowe and Niall Scannell and two conversions and penalty by Cormac O’Flynn left Dolphin 27-6 ahead at the interval. Two tries by Paul Hurley and one by Danny Barnes all converted by O’Flynn completed the rout.

Highfield 50 Thomond 34 (aet)
Highfield defeated Thomond in a very exciting game at Woodleigh Park after extra time. The home side led 15-12 at half time with tries from James Cronin, Paul Stack and Cillian Bohane. Fernando Gallant scored two tries for Thomond and Luan Bosman converted one.
Thomond were 29-15 ahead with twelve minutes remaining with a third try from Gallant and one by substitute Geoff Ryan; Bosman converted both and also added a penalty.
Highfield rallied in the final stages and late tries from Alan Dinan and Rurai O’Donovan both converted by Colin Mahony sent the game into extra time.
Highfield’s fitness proved crucial as tries by Jason Carton, David Kelly and a second by Stack all converted by Mahony. Kevin O’Mahony scored the games twelfth try in the final minute for Thomond.

Old Crescent 24, Midleton 36.
Two late tries from Donagh Hurley and Jeff Hitchmough the latter converted by Hitchmough gave the East Cork side a surprise win at Rosbrien over Old Crescent.
Old Crescent led 21-17 at half time with tries from Rob O’Neill and Lemeki Viapuala and two penalties, drop goal and conversion from Fergal Lawlor. The visitors replied with tries from Damien Smyth and Michael Cronin, both of which Hitchmough converted and he also added a penalty.
Lawlor extended Old Crescent’s advantage with his second drop goal, but a try from Aidan McCarthy converted by Hitchmough tied up the scores before Midleton’s late rally.

Clonakilty 48 Clonmel 3.
There was no joy for a weakened Clonmel side at The Vale, as Clonakilty booked their quarter final spot with an easy victory.
The host led 31-3 at half time with tries from Tom Keogh, Noel O’Sullivan, James Deasy, David Paurini and Paul Dillon. Paurini kicked three conversions and Danny Lyons replied with a penalty for the Tipperary side. James O’Donnell scored two tries after the break and Michael O’Hea one and Paurini converted one.
