Pennefather Hits Hat-Trick In Highfield Win

Youngster Jayne Pennefather scored a hat-trick of tries as Highfield ran out 37-7 winners over Tralee at Woodleigh Park on Sunday in Division 1A of the women’s AIL.

The bonus-point win maintains Highfield’s hopes of finishing in the top four while Tralee remain rooted to the bottom of the table although they do have a game in hand of St. Mary’s, who are also winless.

UL Bohemian keep fourth spot in the table despite losing 15-8 at home by Blackrock. Leah Barbour scored the hosts only try with Niamh Briggs adding a penalty.

Highfield led Tralee 22-7 at half-time in Cork thanks to two tries from the speedy Pennefather and one from Leah Lyons. Norita Duggan kicked two conversions and a penalty with the sole Tralee response coming froom a converted Siobhán Fleming try.

Pennefather, who captains the Ireland U-18s 7s side, touched down her third try in the second half and the bonus-point was secured by Hannah Lane after great work by Heather O’Brien (pictured above).

Division 1A resumes in two weeks with UL Bohs hosting Tralee in a Munster derby and Highfield travelling to Templeville Road to take on St. Mary’s.

In Division 2 South, Fermoy Lionesses beat Dungarvan/Youghal 10 – 0 to keep their place at the top of the table. Fermoy scrum-half Kelly Ahern scored the only try of the game after great work by the forwards with Aoife Walsh kicking a conversion and a penalty.

St. Senan’s moved up to second place after a 15-10 win over Nenagh Ormond in a closely fought contest which could have gone either way. Claire O’Brien and Claire Hestor were the try-scorers for Senan’s with Rachael O’Brien kicking a conversion and a penalty.

Shannon made it two wins on the bounce with a 14-3 win over Ballincollig at Coonagh with a Linda McNamara penalty all Ballincollig had to show for their efforts.
There are two fixtures in Division 2 South next Sunday as Fermoy host Shannon with St. Senan’s welcoming Ballincollig to Tullyvarraga. Ballincollig in action against Shannon
