Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup Round-Up

It was a busy day in Thomond Park as two matches took place in the Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup as St Munchin’s took on Ardscoil Rís and reigning champions Crescent College Comprehensive played Bandon Grammar School.

St Munchin’s emerged 19-10 winners over their Limerick rivals Ardscoil and they now progress to the semi-finals of this year’s competition. Ardscoil, despite their loss, will have another chance as they progress to the quarter-finals where they will meet Crescent College Comprehensive.

The reigning champions beat Bandon Grammar in a high-scoring game this afternoon as they emerged 36-29 winners. Bandon Grammar, who reached the semi-finals last year, have now departed the competition.

St Munchin’s College 19 – 10 Ardscoil Rís

St. Munchin’s booked their place in the semi-finals of the Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Cup with a 19-10 win over Ardscoil Rís at Thomond Park. It means Ardscoil will now have a quarter-final tie to look forward to against Crescent College Comprehensive.

Munchin’s dominated the opening stages and raced into a 14-0 lead after 12 minutes with tries from Oisin Minogue and Danny Williamson. Both were converted by Cillian O’Connor.

Ardscoil got back into the contest just before halftime with a Luke Murphy try which Aaron Byrnes converted.

Early in the second half, Byrnes kicked a penalty to leave Ardscoil trailing 14-10. In the closing stages, Oisin Pepper scored a try for Munchin’s to seal the victory.

Crescent College Comprehensive 36 – 29 Bandon Grammar School

Reigning champions Crescent College booked a quarter-final meeting with Ardscoil Rís thanks to a high-scoring 36-29 win over Bandon Grammar Schools in this afternoon’s second match at Thomond Park.

Bandon Grammar raced into a 0-5 lead when Conor Ryan crossed for the first of his three tries on the day. Fionn Casserly responded with a try for Crescent before a Eoin O’Callaghan penalty put the Limerick school 8-5 in front. Just before half-time, Peter Symington responded with a penalty for Bandon to make matters level at the break.

Crescent took the lead in the second half when Cillian Kenny crossed for a try which O’Callaghan converted but Bandon levelled matters with a try from Calem Harte which was converted by Symington.

Crescent then put the foot on the pedal and scored two successive tries through Marcus Lyons and Mark Fitzgerald which were both converted by O’Callaghan. This gave the Limerick school a 29-15 lead.

However, to their credit, Bandon fought back with a try from Ryan, his second, which Symington converted. Crescent’s Conor Ryan then scored a try which O’Callaghan converted to give Crescent a 36-22 lead. Bandon’s Conor Ryan completed his hattrick with a third try that Symington converted. This reduced the deficit to 36-29.

In the dying stages of the match, a lineout maul from Bandon brought play to the Crescent 22 but a knock on from the Cork school sealed their fate as Crescent progressed to the next round.
