Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide Develop Rugby At Girls X7s Blitz

Girls rugby is on the rise at Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide.

The newly formed girls rugby team at Pobalscoil na Tríonóide, Youghal, participated in their first Girls X7s Blitz at Cork Institute of Technology last week.

Pobalscoil girls rugby is now up and running at U16 and U18 level with the help of local Community Rugby Officer Sean O’Neill and Munster Club Community Rugby Officer Willie Schubert.

Schubert attended the girls’ first training session and will provide support to the team throughout the season with the girls participating in a series of Girls X7s Blitzes at CIT over the coming weeks.

There are a number of girls within the squads who are playing rugby for the first time with several having already experienced rugby through their local club.

Pobalscoil’s Vice-President Bernie Heffernan assisted with the formation of both age-grades and Catherine O’Flynn is contributing her time towards the development of girls rugby at the school.

The Girls X7s game is played on a half pitch with seven players on each team learning the basics of rugby, including catch/pass, tackle, ruck contact area, lineout and scrum set-up.

A number of teams have already participated in the opening Girls X7s Blitzes at CIT and Tralee RFC with Rockwell College, Shannon RFC and Tralee set to host the next round of blitzes later this week.

The Munster Schools Girls X7s Finals Day will be held on Thursday 24 October at CIT with schools from across the province competing at Junior (U15) and Senior (U18) level.

The Emerging Schools Blitzes are also underway as Irish Independent Park and UL were among the venues that welcomed boys and girls from across the province last week with a number of blitzes scheduled to take place throughout October and November, facilitated by Munster Rugby Development Officers.

The aim of the Emerging Schools Initiative is to engage with students, in non-traditional rugby schools, and provide them with the opportunity to play and experience rugby with the hope of students joining local clubs.
