Preparations Underway At Sunday’s Well RFC

The week’s Club Notes are courtesy of Mick Barry, Sunday’s Well RFC.

Following a very successful season, which saw the senior team win the Cyril Fitzgerald Senior Plate, the seconds won The Munster Junior Bowl and the U-20's reaching the final of the cup, many of the players were back in the gym immediately.

However, this time it was training of a different sort as the players were about to participate in a fundraising boxing tournament with local company "Foot Solutions". The players had a gruelling 8 weeks training with local club Togher B.C. Thankfully, nobody was injured during this time and a most enjoyable night was had in The Pav, Patrick Street on June 28th.

Fitness training has continued since the end of last season under the watchful eye of coach Robbie Doyle and his new assistant Neil Lucey. The 'Well squad has been strengthened with the addition of 12 new players and more to join.

Commenting on the club's success Club PRO Mick Barry said " the type of rugby we played last season and the sheer commitment shown by the players and management, encouraged the newcomers to join the club."

"The success of last season was built on the club's fantastic under-age section. Twelve of the senior squad began playing with the club from the age of 8".

"In gaining promotion last season 'The Well' defeated 5 of the top 6 teams in the league, including the champions Highfield and had only three defeats. That is impressive and the team will be anxious to make further strides next season".

Following the club's A.G.M., which was held before a very large attendance, Tony Mulcahy was elected Club President. Tony is the father of last year's successful team captain James, and will be anxious to add more silverware to the trophy cabinet this season. Sean Loftus is the new Senior Vice-President, Lance O'Riordan Junior Vice President and Michael Powell will continue as Chairman.

All coaches and selectors were elected for Seconds, Thirds and U/20 teams.

The annual club Golf Classic was held on July 3rd in Douglas Golf Club when 33 teams participated.
