Preview – Weekending 8th November

It is the Third Round of the AIB All Ireland Cup that dominates the weekend’s program as well as a full program of Junior League games.

The big game in the Cup will be the meeting of Cork Constitution and Shannon at Temple Hill. Theses side nearly always serve up a cracking tie and while both will delay naming their starting line ups until just before kick off time because of the Munster v Ulster A game. It should be a keenly contested tie with little expected between the sides at the finish.

Garryowen play current Division One leaders St. Mary’s College at Dooradoyle. These sides met at the same venue a few weeks ago with victory going to the Dublin side 6-3. Garryowen have been going through a slump in recent weeks and will be anxious to make amends for that league defeat.

The other three Munster sides in the competition all travel north. Dolphin who suffered their first defeat of the season last week are away to Belfast Harlequins and a win would be a big boost to them but if they fail to field a strong side, they could pay the cost.

Young Munster go to Ballymena in a confident mood after last week’s big win over Ballynahinch at the County Down venue. A similar performance should see them book their place in the quarter finals.

U.C.C. who were in excellent form last week with that big win over Dungannon travel to Queens University and a repeat performance would give them a mouth watering quarter final clash against either Cork Constitution or Shannon.

There is one game in the All Ireland Junior Cup and that is the game between Clonmel and Sligo which was postponed last week. Clonmel will be favourites to advance but mindful that two Munster sides were knocked out last week, the Tipperary side would not want to under estimate the Sligo challenge.

The big game in the First Division of the Munster Junior League on Sunday is the meeting of Waterpark and Cashel at Ballinakill. Both sides had contrasting results in last week’s All Ireland Junior Cup, Cashel knocked out Tuam after a hard struggle while Waterpark were at the receiving end of another big defeat by Monivea. This game could have a big bearing on the destination of the title and the defending champions cannot afford another slip up having lost already away to Richmond on the opening day.

Richmond who share top spot with Waterpark will be strongly fancied to take the points at home to struggling Skibbereen.

The two sides just behind the leaders but three points adrift meet at Tralee where Cobh Pirates are the visitors. Tralee unlucky to lose to Richmond last time out will be confident of picking up the points.

Kilfeacle will want to bounce back to winning ways after their heavy trashing by Boyne last week when they travel to St. Senan’s. The Clare side are always difficult to beat at home so Kilfeacle will have their work cut out to get something from this tie.

The other promoted side Ballincollig have made a good start to their First Division campaign. They travel to Crosshaven confident of picking up the points but the home side will be anxious to record their first victory.

In the Second Division leaders Old Christians should get back to winning ways after last weeks defeat by Kanturk with a home victory over Bandon. The visitors go into this tie on the back of two victories but it would be a big upset if they were to deny the home side the points.

Clanwilliam boosted by a great result in Kinsale last week face a tough tie at home to Kanturk and should maintain their challenge with a win.

Muskerry who have also put themselves into a challenging position will have it all to do when they travel to Newport.

Newcastle West could put a big dent in Kinsale’s ambitions of promotion with a home victory.

Galbally who are still unbeaten travel to Youghal in a confident mood but could face a back lash from the home side after some recent defeats.

The only two sides with out a victory in this Division Ennis and St. Mary’s meet at the Clare venue and a win for either side may still see them occupying the relegation places.

In Section A of the Third Division leaders Presentation face a difficult tie at home to Abbeyfeale. The West Limerick side have been very disappointing so far and will want to win this tie if they hope to make their stay in this Division a short one.

Both Castleisland and Killarney have home ties against Kilrush and Scariff and both will be confident of picking up the points.

There is a local derby tie at Killorglin where Corca Dhuibhne are the visitors and the West Kerry Gaeltacht side will fancy their chances of picking up the points.

In Section B only two points separate six of the eight sides at the top of the table. Two of these sides meet when Charleville host Mallow. The home side had an excellent win last week away to Carrick-on-Suir and a repeat performance could see them collect the points.

Fermoy will want to bounce back after last week’s defeat by Waterford City with a home win against Douglas.

Waterford travel to Dungarvan confident that they can pick up maximum points, while bottom side Shandon will have it all to do if they are to overcome the challenge of Carrick-on-Suir.
