14th December 2014 By Munster Rugby
There is going to be a repeat of last season’s Munster Senior Cup Final on Saturday, December 27 when Cork Constitution and Garryowen will renew rivalry in Cork.
Holders Cork Constitution ,who will be bidding for a third successive win in the Munster Senior Cup, only once achieved by the club back in 1905-07, were pushed all the way by a gallant Young Munster side who fought to the bitter end before going down 28-16 at Temple Hill.
Willie Staunton opened the scoring with a magnificent drop goal after ten minutes but the lead lasted only five minutes, after Rory Horgan cut through the Munster’s defence to score a try for Con.
Darragh Lyons kicked two penalties to leave Con’ 11-3 ahead at half time.
Five minutes into the second half the home side extended their advantage when Andrew O’Driscoll scored Con’s second try following a line out and Lyons added the extras.
Munsters hit back and had the margin down to five points at the hour mark following a try from Ger Slattery and a conversion and penalty by Ben Martin.
Con replied with a try from Rory Kenneally and Tomás Quinlan kicked the conversion.
Munsters continued to pressurise the Con defence, but their only reward was a Martin penalty.
Quinlan completed the scoring with a penalty from the half way line in injury time.
The other semi final, which was played on the back pitch in Thomond Park, saw Garryowen defeat U.L. Bohemian 23-3.
Three penalties from Jamie Gavin to one by Shane Airey saw Garryowen lead 9-3 at half-time.
A Dave Sherry try and a penalty try in the second half, both of which Gavin converted saw Garryowen through to the decider.
Sligo had to come from behind to share the spoils with Bruff in Division 2B of the Ulster Bank League, after the sides played out a 9-9 draw at Hamilton Park. Declan Bannon kicked three penalties for Bruff.
Shannon booked their place in the final of the Cyril Fitzgerald Cup with a 28-11 win over Old Crescent at Coonagh.
