Rockwell College triumphed over defending Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Junior Cup champions St Munchin’s College (23-12) to secure the Schools Junior Cup for the first time in 22 years at Irish Independent Park this afternoon.
Rockwell made an excellent start attacking inside the Munchin’s 22 with second-row Osereimen Ediale held up following a charging run.
The resulting scrum saw Number 8 Brian Gleeson evade several tackles to power his way over in the 7th minute.
St Munchin’s responded minutes later through Stephen Hayes, the second-row barging over from close range and left of the posts while Cillian O’Connor added the extras.
Rockwell reclaimed possession with Gleeson carrying effectively in Munchin’s half before hooker Cian Meaney crossed the line, Rory Collins added the conversion.
The Tipperary school continued to dominate and it was Darius Achimugu who made a terrific break from inside his own 10 metre line.
The winger stepped several Munchin’s defenders to race over in the right corner and score a brilliant solo effort in the 21st minute.

Rockwell secured a penalty in front of the sticks after a lengthy spell of possession in the opposition’s half with Collins stepping up to extend his side’s lead in the 43rd minute.
St Munchin’s reacted with a score from prop Gus Harrington who powered his way over left of the posts after the ball was moved right to left.
Rockwell pushed further ahead with a second penalty from Collins slicing the posts in the 52nd minute.
In the final moments, Collins looked to have scored Rockwell’s fourth try of the match however it was disallowed and Munchin’s went on the attack for one final time.
