Richmond Extend Advantage In Division 1 Of Junior League

Richmond hold a five point advantage in Division One of the Munster Junior League as Muskerry extend their advantage at the top in the Second Division.

Richmond were odds on favourites to collect maximum points from their visit to bottom side Clanwilliam, but the defending champions can consider themselves lucky to come away with the points after a 24-0 win. The sides were scoreless as the game entered the final quarter and Brian Mullins broke the deadlock with a penalty. Jeffrey McNamara added two tries both converted by Mullins and Mike Kelleher completed the scoring with a try and a conversion in the final minute.

Kilfeacle lost their unbeaten record when they lost 3-0 away to Galbally. In a game reminiscent of an old junior league tie, a penalty by Craig Airey settled this contest.

A try by Michael Limerick and a Ger Hurley penalty helped Skibbereen to an 8-6 home win over Kanturk in the top game in Division One. Darragh Meade replied with two penalties for the visitors but could have won the game for Kanturk if had converted either of the two penalty attempts in the final five minutes.

Clonmel got themselves back into contention with an 11-6 away win over Waterpark. All the scores came in the opening half. Darragh Lyons opened the scoring with a penalty after five minutes for Clonmel, but Paddy Kiersey had the sides level with a penalty for Waterpark after twelve minutes. Lyons restored the visitors advantage with a penalty mid way through the half but two minutes before the break Graham Claxton levelled with a drop goal for Waterpark. Robbie Carroll hit back immediately with a try for Clonmel.

Tralee kept their title aspirations alive with a 22-14 away win over Crosshaven. Eoin Tough, Sean Hurley and Dan O’Connor scored tries for Tralee and Dan Clarke kicked a penalty and two conversions. Crosshaven replied with tries from Kieran Doran and Eamon Ring with Ian Smith converting both.

Newcastle West continued their good run with a 12-9 home win over Cobh Pirates. Three penalties by Alan Roche had the home side 9-6 at the interval. Eoin Geary replied with two for the Pirates. Roche kicked his fourth penalty to win the game for Newcastle West and Mark Chandler replied with a penalty for Cobh.

St Mary’s were the top scorers of the day with a 30-9 home win over St. Senan’s. John Barry scored two tries for the Corbally side and Matthew Hickey and Ryan Hartigan got one each, with Ben Sargent kicking two penalties and two conversions. Peter Noone replied with three penalties for Senan’s.

Muskerry have extended their lead at the top of the Second Division of the Munster Junior League after maintaining their unbeaten run with a narrow 13-10 victory away to Carrick-on-Suir. Jonathan Buckley converted a penalty try and also kicked a penalty with John Herlihy adding a drop goal. Jason Lonergan replied with a try for Carrick’ and Charlie Boland converted and also kicked a penalty.

Mallow slipped down to third place after they lost at home to Killarney 13-11. Andy Cashman and Padraig Sheahan exchanged first half penalties to leave it 3-3 at half time. Cashman put Mallow in front with his second penalty, but an intercept inside his own half by Sheahan saw him touchdown and he added the conversion and a penalty. A late rally by the home side saw Chris O’Regan score a try but Cashman missed the conversion to level.

Castleisland have moved into second place with their 16-10 away win over Youghal. Matthew Aherne was Castleisland’s try scorer and Connie Reynolds converted and also kicked three penalties. Youghal replied with two tries by Ian Broderick.

Kinsale maintained their promotion challenge with a 14-0 away victory over Presentation. Ian Costello and Stephen Murphy scored tries for the winners and Peter Murphy added two penalties.

Bandon got back to winning ways with a 27-17 home win over Newport. Eoin Kelly and Kevin Lucey scored tries for Bandon and Cathal Crowley kicked five penalties and a conversion.

Dungarvan recorded their first win of the season with a 26-18 home win over Thurles. Laurence Houlihan scored two tries for Dungarvan and Seamus Keating and David Power got one each with Conor Foley converting three of them. Liam Bannon, Shane Moloney and John Coman replied with tries for Thurles and Owen Dwyer kicked a penalty.

Killorglin are the new leaders in the Third Division after their 29-0 away win over Dunmanway-Bantry Bay. Barry Sheehan scored two tries for the Kerry side and David O’Sullivan, Darragh Woods and Darren Curtayne got one each with Trevor West adding two conversions.

Waterford City defeated Fermoy for the second successive week after the Suirsiders emerged 14-6 winners from their league tie. Nicky Jacob scored a try for
Waterford and Barry Power added three penalties. Joe Lee replied with two penalties for Fermoy.

Douglas defeated Kilrush 18-5. Conor Quigley and Shane Burke scored tries for Douglas and Eoin Philpott kicked a conversion and two penalties. Brian Johnson replied with a try for the Clare side.

Scariff kept their challenge on track with a 16-7 home win over Charleville. Ger Burke and Joe McGrath scored tries for Scariff and Conor McNamara added two penalties. Conor Crowley was Charleville’s scorer and Brian Brennan converted.
