Round Up | Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Senior Cup

The final round of the Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Senior Cup group stages takes place this week ahead of the knock-out stages in January 2020.

In Group A, four sides will qualify for the knock-out stages of the competition.

  • Castletroy College v Ardscoil Rís, Tuesday 26 November, Castletroy College, 2.30pm
  • PBC v Bandon Grammar, Wednesday 27 November, Wilton, 2.30pm

Presentation Brothers College, with a game to go have already secured top spot in the group, as Munster CSP’s involvement in the competition ends at the group stages.

There is a possibility of Castletroy College finishing level with PBC on 10 points but even if this was to occur and both sides were level across all areas, the Cork school would still top the group on their superior pre-competition ranking.

Ardscoil Rís cannot move from the bottom of the table (4th place) as the real interest in the group is the tussle for the 2nd/3rd spot between Castletroy and Bandon Grammar.

If Ardscoil Rís were to defeat Castletroy tomorrow, a win for Bandon over PBC on Wednesday would see them avoid the preliminary round of the Cup in January.

There are also two final group fixtures in Group B this week;

  • St Munchin’s College v Rockwell College, Wednesday 27 November, Corbally, 2.30pm
  • Christian Brothers College v Crescent College Comprehensive, Wednesday 27 November, Lansdowne, 2.30pm

Glenstal Abbey have played all four of their games and will finish 5th.

As a result, the Limerick school will play Ardscoil Rís in a knock-out preliminary round come January.

St Munchin’s and Rockwell is a straight battle for 3rd/4th spot where the Limerick side has to win if they are to go ahead of Rockwell in the table.

It’s a similar story in the CBC v Crescent game where Crescent require a win to top the current Cup holders.

Crescent are still guaranteed at least second if they were to lose, which means two Cup games post Christmas.
