Rugby Development In Numbers | Season 2018/19

It’s been another rewarding season for the Munster Rugby Development Department whose hard work and dedication continues to grow the game throughout the province.

We take a look back at the numbers from the rugby development activities which contributed towards a successful season across all aspects of the domestic game.

Rugby Development In Numbers 

Rugby Services

  • The Ballyseedy Home & Garden Volunteer Recognition Programme was launched with 6 monthly winners receiving awards.
  • 97% of clubs have completed the bronze level criteria on the IRFU Clubhouse system.

Safeguarding

  • 94% of clubs have achieved basic compliancy criteria while clubs will continue to be monitored and supported to ensure all coaches working with players U18 have up to date Garda vetting.

Emerging Schools Programme

  • 58 boys’ secondary schools participated in the emerging schools programme with regional conferences each running 4 rounds of blitz days throughout the season. The programme culminated in regional finals days in Thomond Park and Cork Institute of Technology.
  • 76 blitz days & festivals held.

Girls Age-Grade Rugby

  • 21% increase in youth numbers playing in clubs.
  • 13 girls’ secondary schools participated in the emerging schools programme.
  • 31 blitz days & festivals.
  • 20 clubs facilitated independent girls’ mini sections during the 2018/19 season.

Summer Camps

  • 1600 children attended the 2018 Bank of Ireland Munster Rugby Summer Camps.
  • 22 venues confirmed for the 2019 Bank of Ireland Munster Rugby Summer Camp programme.
  • 7 2019 Bank of Ireland Talent Camp squads training across 3 venues – University of Limerick, Cork Institute of Technology and Irish Independent Park;
  • – 84 boys in the U16 Talent Camp squad.
  • – 46 boys in the U17 & U18 Talent Camp squad.
  • – 23 boys in the U19 Talent Camp squad.
  • – 30 girls in the U18 Girls Talent Camp squad.
  • – 10 girls in the U18 Girls Talent Identification Programme.
  • – 30 women in the Munster Women’s squad.
  • 4 Munster Rugby Girls Skills Camps scheduled across July and August.
  • 1 inaugural Munster Rugby School of Excellence launched and scheduled for August in Rockwell College.

Play Rugby Programme

  • 207 National schools participated in the Play Rugby Programme during the 2018/19 season.

Disability Rugby

  • 5 Munster clubs have active programmes for disability rugby.

Coach Education

  • 13 coaching courses run (444 participants).
  • Over 800 coaches using the new online coaching resource.
  • Team of 10 – all-female coach and management staff announced for Munster Women and U18 Girls squads.

Referees

  • 46 people attended the new referees courses run during the 2018/19 season.
  • 1 refereeing recruitment, retention and education plan scheduled for 2019/20.
