RWC: Getting To Know Laura Guest

As the build up to the Women’s Rugby World Cup continues we catch up with Laura Guest as she prepares for Ireland’s campaign beginning Friday, 1st August against USA in Marcoussis, France.

Originally from Templebryan in West Cork, Laura began her rugby career with local club Clonakilty aged 16 where she started out in the out-half position.

Laura went on to play senior women’s rugby with Limerick side Shannon before moving to Highfield in 2010 "Laura where she claimed the Munster Cup and All Ireland Cup.

In her twelve years on the Munster squad Laura, who now plays in the forwards has nine interprovincial titles. With 32 international caps to her credit, she represented her country in the 2006 and 2010 World Cup and played on the Ireland side that won the historic 6 Nations and Grand Slam title in 2013.

Employed as a school teacher at Midleton College in East Cork Laura is assistant coach of the school’s senior rugby squad.

A keen golfer and member of the Lee Valley Golf Club, Laura also received the West Cork Sports Star of the Year award in 2013 off the back of her Six Nations success.

The Ireland squad will take on Wales on Sunday, 20th July in Malahide (kick-off 3pm) in a World Cup warm up friendly.

Biggest influence on career: Richie Draper (first coach).

Best career advice you were ever given: Talent is nothing without hard work.

Best advice you would give yourself: Believe in yourself.

What you like most/least about being a rugby player: Most – Friends you meet. Least – All the driving.

Best rugby memory: Grand Slam win for Ireland in 2013.

Rugby team you admire most: Midleton College SCT, I coach them alongside Ray Power and they are a fantastic group of people.

Who would you invite to dinner and why: My nephews Simon and Andrew because it's hard to find the time to visit them with work and training.
