Saturday Senior Rugby Round-Up

It was a bad day for the two Limerick clubs in Ulster as Highfield continued their march towards the Ulster Bank League Division 2B title.

Young Munster who started the day in fourth place in Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League, slipped back to seventh after a 30-6 away defeat at Ballynahinch. Two first half penalties from Gearoid Lyons saw Young Munster lead 6-3 at half time but they were totally outplayed in the second half.

U.L. Bohemian lost away to bottom side Belfast Harlequins 38-7 in Division 1B. A first half try from Ian Condell converted by Shane Airey saw the visitors trail 26-7 at the interval.

In Division 2A Cashel were the only Munster side to win as they recorded a23-10 bonus point win at home to Rainey Old Boys.

Both Nenagh Ormond and Thomond’s recent loss of form continued as both were beaten. Thomond travelled to leaders Old Wesley and went down 25-15, while Nenagh Ormond lost at home to Naas 17-10.

Highfield defeated Wanderers 36-13 at Merrion Road to maintain their lead at the top of Division 2B. They scored five tries with Ben Murphy getting two and Dave Kelly, Dave O’Hea and Miah Cronin one each. Paddy O’Toole kicked four conversions and one penalty.

Midleton had to come from behind to defeat Kanturk in their local derby at the Towns Park 18-16. Dave Smyth and Aidan McCarthy scored tries for Midleton and Paul Daly kicked two penalties and a conversion. Kealon Buckley replied with a try for Kanturk and Paul O’Keeffe converted and also added three penalties.

Sunday’s Well continued their recent good run with a fortunate 18-15 home win over struggling Boyne. Skipper James Mulcahy and John Moynihan scored tries for the ‘Well and Shane O’Riordan kicked a conversion and two penalties.
