Scariff RFC Set For Golden Jubilee Celebrations

Scariff RFC will marks its 50th year celebration this weekend, 18th October with the staging of a Six Nations over 35 rugby tournament.

Located in the market town of Scariff, a focal point for all the surrounding villages that make up an area known as East Clare the club has made significant achievements since its formation in 1963. It secured its own grounds back in 1996 and since then it has built a club house, changing facility, erected floodlighting around the pitches and provides a fully equipped gym for all its members.

On the field of play over the last number of years the club has enjoyed success at many senior level divisions of competition and at present the is building a new senior squad, mostly made up off young players who have emerged from the club’s under-age section.

Like any small club based in rural Ireland Scariff’s progress will depend heavily on the maintaining and growth of its young player participation and to date great strides have been made in this area with the introduction of the IRFU Mini and Youth policy guidelines, ruining parallel to the club’s own structures along with the positive support from the local community.

On the social side the last twenty years has seen Scariff RFC establish a very warm friendship with a French club, St Apollinaire of Dijion. Every second year the French club travel to Scariff RFC and vice versa, and it was during one of these recent visits to France that Scariff took part in an over thirty five tournament. Following its success it was agreed they would stage a similar tournament as the flagship event to mark Scariff’s Golden Jubilee.

Teams travelling to this tournament will include Kettering of England, Promod of Italy, St Apollinaire of Dijion as well as local clubs Ennis and Portlaoise.

Scariff RFC will also host an Irish Whiskey Reception for the visiting teams on Friday night, 18th October and will also be staging a Banquet for over two hundred and fifty people the following evening with Guest of Honour Pat Fitzgerald President of the IRFU attending.

On Sunday the visiting teams will be taken on a tour of Lough Derg as well as the outlying area of East Clare before retiring to a farewell reception that will include local traditional music and dance.
