Schools Junior Cup Wins For Glenstal Abbey & Crescent College Comp

Glenstal Abbey and Crescent College Comprehensive will have home draws in the Seat Munster Schools Junior Cup quarter finals as both sides were declared winners on the first try rule in their opening games.

Glenstal Abbey 5, Rockwell 5

Glenstal went through to the winners group in the SEAT Munster Schools Junior Cup by virtue of scoring the first try at the splendid UL new complex.

Played in appalling conditions with a gale force crossfield breeze and torrential rain throughout neither side deserved to go out of the competition….if only for braving the elements.

The wind played a crucial part in the Glenstal try ten minutes before the interval. A penalty attempt was blown off course and fell into the hands of centre Charles Gavin who made his way over.

Following a driving maul by their forwards Rockwell got their try by second row Mark Collins. Scoring chances were few and far between in a game dominated by the forwards.

Like their senior side, Rockwell must try to win their way through the losers section and will be away from home.

Glenstal's Darren Halpenny and Rory Clarke stood out in the pack with William Murray doing well at number 8. Thanade McCoole at scrumhalf did well with Ben Molony doing well at fullback.

For Rockwell Mark Collins, Andrew Phelan and Kevin Kelly worked hard up front with Jamie Stone, Loic Gately and Joey Noonan doing well in the backs.

Glenstal Abbey: B Molony; S Hammon, C Gavin, D Floyd, T Molony; B Healy, T McCoole; H Downing, G Downing, P Malony; R Clarke, D Halpenny; J Williams, M Fleming, W Murray.
Replacements: E Bergin for P Molony, S Butler for Clarke.

Rockwell College: J Noonan; G Kavanagh, J Stone, P Leamy, L Gately; P Feehan, O Mangan; M Kennedy, D Barron, K Kelly; M Murphy, M Collins; D Shaw, A Phelan, C Cashman.
Replacements: B Fitzpatrick for M Murphy, C Ryder for Phelan.
Referee: T O'Donoughue (MAR).

Crescent College Comp 7, Ardscoil Ris 7.

Crescent College will have a home draw in the quarter finals of the SEAT Munster Schools Junior Cup after the sides finished level at Rosbrien as they were declared winners as a result of scoring the first try.

In an evenly contested first half Crescent took the lead with a try from Daniel Hurley which Brian Ryan converted. Ardscoil levelled with a try from Ian Brown which Evan Cusack converted.

Conditions deteriorated in the second half as the game became a battle between the forwards and it was Ardscoil who were coming out on top in these exchanges with Ian Brown giving an excellent display.

Crescent College Comp.: Brian Ryan; Kelvin Brosnan, Daniel Hurley, Brian Fitzgerald, Tommy O’Hora; Matthew Hanly, Mark Fitzgerald; Jack Henchy, Michael Sheehan, Sean Scanlon-Garry; Thomas Connolly, Scott Leahy; Rory McMahon, Edwin Wixted, John Blake.

Ardscoil Ris: Colin Madden; Conor Lipper, Hugh Fenton, Patrick Ryan, Lloyd Mulcahy; Evan Cusack, Craig Casey; Conor O’Brien, Colin Slattery, Michael O’Dwyer; Stephen Cullen, Ronan Coffey; Luke Clohessy, Ian Brown, Odhran Ring.
