Schools Update

Schools PRO Maurcie Hartery reflects on last weeks competitive action across the province.

The Bowen Shield Final (U18) took centre stage this week, with CBC meeting Bandon Grammar in the final in Irish Independent Park. It was CBC, who topped the league section, that ran out 23 – 13 winners. For a full match report please click here.

The McCarthy Cup (U15) B final was also played this week. In a repeat of the A Final last week, which PBC triumphed, it was the turn of CBC to exact some revenge. Played in very difficult conditions, it was the men from Sydney’s Hill who won 12 – 5. For a match report please click here.

The O’Brien Cup (U19 C Schools Competition) continued this week with two matches to be played. High School CBS tried to put last week’s disappointment of a loss in the final of the schools qualifiers behind them when they met Newtown in Clonmel. It was High School who prevailed on a scoreline of 22 – 20. In Killarney, Scoil Muire Gan Smal defeated Intermediate School by the narrowest of margins 11 – 10 to advance to the next round.

The Kidney Cup (U16) began this week. This is a B Competition for Schools at an Under 16 (Junior Cup) level. This comprises of mostly B sides from A schools but also is open to B schools to compete. In the first of two quarter final ties that took place this week, C.B.C proved too strong for P.B.C, winning 31 – 0. This sets up a semi final tie v Midleton College, who received a bye into that stage of the competition. The second quarter final took place on Wednesday on the 4G pitch in UL. It was Crescent who progressed to the semi final with a 43 – 0 victory over St. Munchin’s College. They will now meet the winners of the Rockwell and Villiers quarter final tie.

Another competition that continued this week was the Mungret Shield (U16). This is similar to the Kidney Cup as it is a B competition for Junior Level but the difference is that only B schools can enter this competition. St. Clements and Villiers went to battle this week in foul conditions on Thursday. It was St. Clements who prevailed on a scoreline of 22 – 7 in Villiers.

The King Cup (U16 C Schools Competition) continued this week with two matches to be played. Like in the O’Brien Cup, High School CBS tried to put last week’s disappointment of a loss in the final of the schools qualifiers behind them when they met Cashel CC in Clonmel. They succeeded in this, by running out 22 – 15 winners to advance to the next round. We received no score from the other tie between St. Anne’s CC and Rice College.

The knockout stages of the McCarthy Cup (U15) C section also continued this week as two semi finals took place. Colaiste Chiarain from Croom booked their place in the final with an excellent 19 – 12 win over Abbeyfeale CC.

In Senior friendlies around the province, Castletroy College “B” were defeated by Roscrea “B” 13 – 7 in Limerick. Castletroy then travelled to Clongowes on Saturday and were defeated 20 – 12. In Cork, the annual charity game between C.B.C and P.B.C took place on Friday in Lansdowne. It was the home side that won 16 – 15 in a very entertaining clash.

At junior level, C.B.C and P.B.C meet in Lansdowne on Wednesday with C.B.C winning by the narrowest of margins 14 – 13. Also during the week, St. Munchins College and Castletroy College played out a highly entertaining 12 all draw on the 4G in UL.

The annual Brother O'Reilly Cup charity match took place last Friday night at C.B.C. home grounds in Lansdowne where the hosts took on their local rivals P.B.C. The evening finished up with a 16-15 victory to CBC in a tightly contested Munster Senior Cup warm up. All gate proceeds were donated to L'Arche Cork.
