Both Cork Colleges Christians and Pres’ continue to set the early pace in both the Bowen Shield and McCarthy Cup
In a very exciting contest at Rockwell, C.B.C. defeated the Tipperary College 17-15. A try by Simon Brennan which Coleman Kennedy converted gave Rockwell a 7-3 interval lead. Rory Burke kicked a penalty for the visitors. Burke added three further penalties for the visitors and a try by Adam Finn made sure of victory. Kevin Maher scored a second try for Rockwell and Kennedy kicked a penalty.
A big upset looked on the cards at Bandon, when Bandon Grammar led Pres’ 5-0 and totally controlling the game with thirty minutes remaining. However the visitors upped the ante in the final stages and their powerful pack set the platform for four tries.
Mighty Okafor gave the home side a 5-0 interval with a well worked individual try after sixteen minutes. Cian Murphy, Aiden Slattery, Mark O’Callaghan and Will Dennehy scored tries for the MardykeCollegeand Tommy Duggan expertly converted three of them from the sideline.
CastletroyCollege defeated Glenstal Abbey in an exciting tie at Castletroy’s College new pitch. Andrew Boland, Muritz Finkert and James Lanescored tries for Glenstal and Kevin O’Keeffe kicked two conversions.
In the Under 15 League (McCarthy Cup) both Cork sides also secured victories.
Pres’ defeated Bandon Grammar 54-7. The winners scored nine tries with James Poland getting three, Seafar Guilfoyle and Paul Tobin got two apiece and Paul Kiernan and Caolan O’Flynn also touched down. David O’Sullivan and Robin Reidy each kicked two conversions. Tommy O’Callaghan scored a try for the home side and Bobby Smith converted.
Tries by Michael Clune and Evan Mintern and a conversion and penalty by Michael O’Halloran earned C.B.C. a 15-0 away win over Rockwell.
