Season Ends With Senior Cup Final
13th May 2016 By Munster Rugby
Young Munster and Cork Constitution lock horns in the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup decider at Thomond Park on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm, with the Temple Hill side going for four-in-a-row, while ‘Munster’s last triumph was in 2010.
This will be the fourth meeting of these sides at Senior level this season with ‘Munsters having won the two group games in the Ulster Bank League between these sides, while Con’ defeated the Limerick side in the AIL semi-final. Young Munster also defeated the Temple Hill side two weeks ago 22-13 in the final to claim their first Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup title since 1999.
The Temple Hill side won the Bateman Cup for the fourth successive year as they defeated Galwegians 38-19 in Galway and they will be looking to bounce back from their recent 28-25 AIL final defeat by Clontarf in a bid to retain the Munster Senior Cup.
Con’ began their defence of the trophy with a comprehensive 57-6 away win over Highfield in October. This was followed up by a narrow 11-9 home victory over Garryowen who they defeated in the last two finals. They were pushed all the way by Nenagh Ormond in the semi-final at Temple Hill, with a late Tomas Quinlan penalty putting the game beyond the North Tipperary side’s reach on a 30-22 scoreline.
Young Munster came through three Limerick City derbies against Thomond, UL Bohemian and Old Crescent. Their toughest test was against UL Bohes as they ran out 14-13 winners. They promptly bounced back from their AIL semi-final defeat to beat Old Crescent 29-14 two weeks ago and book their place in the final.
This should surely attract a big crowd to the final in what should be another closely fought tie.
