Senior Club Rugby Round-Up

Munster U18 Schools to face Leinster in their Interprovincial opener.

Cork Constitution defeated leaders Lansdowne in Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League on Saturday afternoon as both Young Munster and Garryowen lost narrowly in Dublin.

Cork Constitution, who started the day at the foot of the table, defeated Lansdowne 31-13 at Temple Hill. The home side led 15-6 at half time and had tries from Conor Kindregan, Shane Daly and James Murphy. Tomás Quinlan kicked two conversions and four penalties.

An injury time converted try denied Young Munster victory at College Park as Trinity defeated the Limerick side 32-27 to move the students into second place. The visitors led 10-8 at the interval and scored tries through Craig O’Hanlon, Cian Bohane and Jack Harrington. David O’Mahony kicked a conversion and a penalty and substitute Alan Tynan added two conversions and a penalty.

Garryowen, who trailed 10-0 at half-time away to Clontarf, had second half tries from Alex Wooton and Liam Coombes with Neill Cronin converting both, but an injury-time Clontarf drop-goal gave the home side a 16-14 victory.

U.L. Bohemian continue to lead in Division 1B after their 27-23 win over Galwegians at Crowley Park. Tries from James Ryan and Brian Walsh, both converted by Rick McKenna, gave the visitors a 14-10 interval lead. Finbarr Aherne added another try for U.L. Bohs and McKenna converted and also added two penalties.

Buccaneers closed the gap on the leaders to four points with a 49-36 home win over UCC. Conor Barry (2), Daire Feeney, Rob O’Donovan and Chris McAulliffe scored tries for College and Kevin O’Keeffe converted four of the tries as well as adding a penalty.

A second half revival from Ballymena saw them come from 9-0 down at half-time to defeat Dolphin 24-16 at Eaton Park. Three penalties from Barry Keeshan gave Dolphin a nine point lead at the interval. Ryan Murphy scored a try for Dolphin which Keeshan converted.

Shannon are still looking for their first win after their 14-10 home defeat by Naas on the back pitch in Thomond Park. Skipper Lee Nicholas gave the home side a great start with a try in the opening minute and Ronan McKenna converted to leave Shannon 7-0 ahead at half-time. Naas were level inside the opening minute of the second half with a converted try but McKenna restored Shannon’s advantage with a penalty only for the visitors to snatch the points with a converted try nine minutes from time.

Nenagh Ormond continued their challenge for honours in Division 2A after an 18-8 home win over Queen's University. Clayton Stewart scored two tries, a conversion and two penalties for the Tipperary side.

Highfield remain unbeaten after their 29-9 away win over Galway Corinthians. John McLoughlin scored two tries for Highfield and Dave O’Connell one. Paddy O’Toole kicked a conversion and four penalties.

Cashel are still pointless after their 22-13 defeat by Sunday’s Well at Irish Independent Park. The Tipperary side made a great start with a penalty try and a conversion and penalty from John Lillis. Cashel failed to add to their tally when the ‘Well had two players yellow carded in separate incidents. Lillis added another penalty early in the second half to lead 13-7, but a late ‘Well rally that yielded tries from Francis Moynihan and Conor O’Regan and two conversions and a penalty by Shane O’Riordan saw the home side take the spoils. Michael Boland scored a first half try for the ‘Well.

Old Crescent have moved up to fourth place in Division 2B after their 30-27 away win over Skerries. Larry Hanly, Cathal O’Reilly and Brian Touhy scored tries for the Limerick side. Shane O’Brien kicked two conversions and a penalty and Barry Neville added a conversion and two penalties.

A late rally by Dungannon saw them defeat Thomond 36-30 at Liam Fitzgerald Park. Sasha Slijepeevic and Dermot Fitzgerald were try scorers for Thomond and they were also awarded a penalty try. Fitzgerald kicked three penalties and two conversions.

Midleton lost further ground on leaders Rainey Old Boys in Division 2C after they were held to a 22-22 draw by Boyne in Drogheda. Paul Daly, Aidan McCarthy, Sean White and Daniel Murray scored tries for the east Cork side and Stuart Lee added a penalty.

Bruff moved off the foot of the table as they defeated Sligo 26-25 at Kilballyowen Park. John Hogan scored two tries and Tony Cahill and Mark Cosgrove got one each for Bruff. David O’Grady added three conversions.

Kanturk and Navan, who played out a 0-0 draw when they met at Knocknacolan last January, produced 12 tries with victory going to Navan 47-37 in their basement clash. Sean Cremin scored three tries for Kanturk and Ronan O’Brien and Daithi Fitzpatrick also scored tries. Conor Cremin kicked three conversions and three penalties.
