Senior Club Rugby Round-Up
15th October 2016 By Munster Rugby
Cashel caused the only upset in the quarter-finals of the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup as both Cork Constitution and Young Munster recorded big home wins.
A try after 17 minutes by winger Andrew Wallace gave Cashel a surprising 5-0 away win over UCC at the Mardyke to earn the Tipperary club a home semi-final against Young Munster. Cashel are without a win in the All Ireland League and had to defend heroically as the Students did everything to get back in the game but a stubborn Cashel defence held firm.
Holders Cork Constitution are still on course for a club record fifth successive cup win as they saw off the challenge of Nenagh Ormond at Temple Hill thanks to a 57-10 victory. The home side raced into a 24-0 lead after 27 minutes with tries from Tomás Quinlan, James Murphy and Sonny Dwyer with Quinlan converting all three and also adding a penalty. Clayton Steward kicked a penalty for the visitors a minute before the interval. Tries by Ned Hodson and Niall Kenneally both converted by Quinlan extended Con’s lead before Eathon Moloney replied with a try for Nenagh and Stewart converted to leave it 38-10. Further tries by Michael Clune, Shane Daly and Rob Jermyn and a conversion each by Kenneally and Murphy completed the scoring.
Con will host Highfield in their semi-final.
Young Munster had a comfortable 50-3 win over Shannon at Tom Clifford Park. The winners scored eight tries and led 26-3 at half-time. Darren Ryan scored two tries for the Cookies and Ger Slattery, Colm Skehan, Alan Tynan, Rob Guerin, Daniel Walsh and Jake Fehilly got a try each. Tynan kicked three conversions and Paul Downes two. Ronan McKenna replied with a penalty for Shannon.
In the other quarter-final tie, Highfield received a walkover from Old Crescent.
There was only one game played in the Cyril Fitzgerald Plate which resulted in Garryowen defeating Bruff 33-0 at Kilballyowen Park.
