Senior Rugby Round-Up

With the provincial derby between Dolphin and Young Munster postponed due to a waterlogged Musgrave Park, there were just four Ulster Bank Division 1A fixtures down for decision today.

Lansdowne extended their lead at the top of Division 1A of the Ulster bank League to four points after they beat Garryowen 23-0 in the top of the table clash at Dooradoyle.

While at the opposite end Shannon were defeated 20-14 by Clontarf at Coonagh, leaving them seven points adrift at the bottom. Emmett McLoughlin scored a try for Shannon and Rob Guerin kicked three penalties.

A late try by Ian Condell for U.L. Bohemian saw them clinch a narrow 27-24 victory away to Old Belvedere. David Johnson and Mossie Lawlor also scored tries for the visitors. JJ Hanrahan converted all three tries and Ben Martin kicked two penalties.

A penalty try and a share of the points kicked by both Gerry Hurley (2 penalties) and Johnny Holland (3 penalties) was enough for Cork Constitution to claim the spoils in a 22-12 victory over fellow Bateman Cup finalists St. Mary’s College at Templeville Road.

Bruff lost their bottom of the table clash away to Dungannon 12-10 in Division 1B. Mark Cosgrave scored a try for Bruff and Brian Cahill kicked a conversion and penalty.

U.C.C. lost top spot in Division 2A after going down 11-8 away to Cashel. The students led 8-3 at half time with a try from John Fitzgerald and a penalty by Sean Og Murphy. Pat O’Connor scored a penalty for the home side with Giles Boland scoring a try and Ollie McGlinchey kicking the final penalty. College missed a last minute penalty to level the game.

Three first half penalties from Aidan McNulty was enough for Old Crescent who defeated Highfield 9-6 at Woodleigh Park. Paddy O’Toole replied for the home side with a penalty in each half.

Midleton lost away to Galwegians 31-13 but failed to take advantage of the elements in the second half when they were in with a great chance of taking something from this encounter. Joe Ryan scored a try for Midleton and Jeff Hitchmough kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Two penalties by Dan Fogarty was not enough for Nenagh Ormond who lost away to City of Armagh 17-6 in Division 2B.

Thomond won their first game in the league with a 20-11 home win over fellow strugglers Ards. Eoin O’Neill and Warren Kelly scored tries for Thomond and Desmond Fitzgerald kicked two penalties and two conversions.

Three penalties from James Deasy was not enough for Clonakilty who lost away to Boyne 14-9.

Trailing 13-6 at half time Sunday’s Well failed to take advantage of the elements in the second half as they lost 20-16 away to Navan. A late try by James Mulcahy secured a losing bonus point for the ‘Well. Shane O’Riordan kicked three penalties and a conversion.
