Senior Rugby Round-Up

Young Munster lose in Dublin but still hold on to third place as Garryowen overtake Ballymena with win at Dooradoyle.

Eight of the top ten sides in Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League are all in contention for a top four place after today’s results.

Young Munster travelled to Templeville Road and lost to struggling St. Mary’s 21-15. The visitors led 12-9 at half time with tries from Yasin Brown and Sean Rennison and a conversion by Gearoid Lyons. Lyons added a penalty in the second half but The Cookies had to settle for a losing bonus point.

A try from James Murphy in the final minute earned Cork Constitution a 13-10 home win over Clontarf. Tomas Quinlan converted and Daragh Lyons kicked two penalties in the opening ten minutes of the game.
Dolphin earned a draw for the third successive week when they shared the spoils at Ballymacarn Park with a 7-7 draw against Ballynahinch. Ryan Murphy scored Dolphin’s try and Barry Keeshan converted.

In Division 1B Garryowen moved into second place ahead of Ballymena on points’ difference. Winger Alex Wootton was the star man as he scored three tries for Garryowen after their 32-24 home win over Ballymena.

Tries by Barry O’Mahony and Wootton both converted by Jamie Gavin and a Gavin penalty to lead 17-3 at half time. Wootton added two further tries for the bonus point and Gavin kicked a conversion and a drop goal.

In Division 2A, Thomond kept up their promotion challenge with a 16-13 win over Skerries at Liam Fitzgerald Park. Brendan Guilfoyle scored the try for Thomond and Dean O’Brien added a conversion and three penalties.

Nenagh Ormond got back to winning ways with a 21-7 home win over City of Derry and Cashel defeated U.C.C. 23-18 at the Spafield.

In Division 2B, Bruff’s recent revival came to a halt when they lost a closely fought contest at Tullamore 24-23.

Midleton got back to winning ways with a 27-0 home win over Boyne. Michael Cronin, Rob Smyth and Alan Long scored tries for Midleton and Paul Daly converted all three and added two penalties.

Two John Moynihan tries helped Sunday’s Well to a 10-0 home win over Old Crescent.

A try by Gareth O’Hanlon converted by Brian Mullins and a penalty by Stephen Clancy helped Richmond to a 10-10 home draw against high flying Sligo.
