St Clement’s College Win Mungret Cup

St Clement’s College defeated Midleton College 15-10 to win this season’s Mungret Cup for the first time in 35 years at PBC grounds in Wilton, Cork, on Wednesday afternoon.

It was a strongly contested final with both sides playing expansive attacking rugby which remained 0-0 for much of the first-half.

St Clement’s broke the deadlock with a well-worked try finished off by centre Adam Marshal and converted by out-half John Bateman.

The score remained at 7-0 at the interval.

Both teams started the second-half as they finished the first with aggressive attacking plays to try and break down each other’s resilient defence systems.

St Clement’s worked another impressive team try to lead 12-0 but Midleton struck back by applying a lot of pressure on the Clement’s line and eventually breaking through with a try by out-half Conor Walsh.

Further pressure soon after lead to a penalty for Midleton, converted by Diarmuid Phelan.

This left the score 12-10 and it set up an enthralling finish. St Clement’s regained composure and attacked effectively towards the Midleton line, being rewarded with a penalty following significant pressure.

The converted penalty was to be the last play and St Clement’s were victorious in what was a highly contested final. Munster Branch President, Charlie Buckley, was on hand to present the Mungret Cup to St Clement’s College.
