St Senan's David Dunne (centre) was December's Volunteer of the Month Award winner.

The Ballyseedy Home & Garden Volunteer of the Month for December was awarded to St Senan’s Coach, David Dunne, for his continued efforts towards the development of Junior and underage rugby.

A member of the St Senan’s 1st XV who play in Munster Junior Division 1, David gives back to the club through his role as coach / manager of the 2nd Junior XV and U15 squads, while also helping train the U13 and U14 sections.

Also known as ‘Davy,’ the 30-year-old coach contributes to the development of the underage blitzes and is often found co-ordinating matches for the kids early on a Sunday morning.

On receiving his award, David said: “It was a huge shock and I was delighted to even be considered for the award.

“I’m really into the club aspect of rugby and that’s the ethos I’m trying to get across to the younger lads as it been a massive part of my life, ever since I started playing at 16 with St Senan’s.

“I got involved with the 2nd team and the underage sections to help with a drop off in participation at the club between the ages of 16-18.

“Last year was the first year that we have fulfilled a full season of 2nd team fixtures, which was one of my goals while trying to get numbers up and get lads back involved.”

The Clare club have run numerous fundraisers throughout the years and David has always been on hand to help with the organisation of events, while also ensuring the involvement of senior players.

David continued: “We are a smaller club and fundraisers are such a simple thing, if everyone gives an hour then a fundraiser will be covered off very quickly.”

St Senan’s President, Derek Clancy, said: “Davy’s commitment to St Senan’s is outstanding.

“For such a young guy to give up so much of his time to help out with teammates and kids is above and beyond.

“If there’s anything I ever need to be done at the club, he’s always there with his hand up first. He’s a great sportsman who is also training to become a referee when he finds the time outside of coaching.

“There would be a young enough squad in our 2nd team and he really looks after them, he’s like a second dad to most of them.”
