20th October 2014 By Munster Rugby
The annual Kerry Schools blitz took place last Thursday and proved a huge success with 90 girls taking part in the sun at Listowel Town Park.
There were 10 teams competing for the Junior and Senior Shields and the event received a very positive response from the players and their teachers.
Tarbert Comprehensive claimed the Junior Shield and St Joseph's Secondary School, Ballybunion were the winners of the Senior Shield. Listowel Community College, Listowel Presentation and Causeway Comprehensive School were the other teams competing in an exciting tournament.
Great excitement and skill was displayed by all the girls throughout an action-packed event. It was a round robin format after which the top two teams played in a Grand Final, all the competing teams stayed to watch which added to the excitement of the finale.
The aim of the initiative is to encourage girls to join their local rugby club along with giving some girls the opportunity to play another sport that they might identify with.
Irish international and IRFU Development Executive of Girls & Women’s Rugby Nora Stapleton was in attendance much to the delight of the girls.
Listowel Rugby Club have underage girls teams at Under-15 and Under-18 level which is in its second year of being established.
Both Listowel RFC Girls teams are to compete in the Munster league and are currently setting up a development squad at Under-13 to participate in an upcoming blitz.
