Sundays Well Look Forward To 2A Challenge

Sundays Well secured promotion to Division 2A last Saturday with a scintillating first half performance that saw them defeat Greystones 34-22 at Irish Independent Park.

With a bad start to their campaign, the Well lost their first three opening matches before turning their season around and eventually gaining promotion for the second consecutive year.

“I’m thrilled for the players and I am thrilled for the club”, said Head Coach Robbie Doyle.

“We got off to an absolute belter of a start and I couldn’t believe it myself that we were 21 points up after fifteen minutes.

“But Greystones are a very good side and they always were going to come back at us. They really took over at the start of the second-half and put some points on the board to bring it back to a twelve point game.

“At that stage, we were out on our feet and we were really digging deep. We have been doing that all year, when teams have come at us we have defended. It was great to close it out and we never let them beyond that twelve point barrier, and I am absolutely thrilled to win out.”

Sunday’s Well will join their Cork neighbours Highfield, who were also recently promoted to Division 2A, a reward club president Tony Mulcahy said is justly deserved.

“I’m absolutely delighted”, he said. “It was a huge effort from everyone within the club, from the executive to the coaching staff, to the players, and I think we got what we deserved to get at the end of the season.

“The squad was absolutely devastated with injuries at the start of the year and we lost our first three games, but once we turned that around and got some of the key positions filled, it all went well afterwards.

“We came up last year – when the new 2B was formed we were promoted, and to now be in 2A is a remarkable achievement.

Boasting a well established and successful youths structure, Mulcahy said the continuous development has been a main contributor towards the clubs overall success.

“I think our success has come from our grassroots up, hard work and a lot of time invested in our youths”, he commented.

“We’ve had a great youth structure for years. We also fielded an Under 20 side this year which is very positive as the majority of our players are coming through our own system.”

With the future looking bright, Mulcahy paid tribute to the Well’s coaching team and said they will hope to put the squad in contention for a play-off spot again next season.

“Robbie has put a good crew around himself and it has paid dividends. The team is very young, and they’re eager to learn with the right people around them teaching them the ropes.

“Promotion is very important for retaining players. The club becomes more attractive all the time and the young fellas that are coming through will take more notice and embrace the set up.

“We’ll hold our own in 2A next season and we have to look at the top four again. There’s no point in thinking the other way, that will definitely be our target.”
