Sunday’s Well Set Out For League Promotion

Sunday’s Well Set Out For League Promotion

The All Ireland League promotion play-offs get under way this weekend as Division 2B side Sunday’s Well travel to Judges Road to take on City of Derry.

On the other side of the draw Skerries host Greystones, who finished fourth in Division 2B, as the north county Dublin club look to take the first step in maintaining their Division 2A status.

The Leesiders will set out to claim a place in Division 2A and join their Cork neighbours Highfield RFC next season, who recently finished top of the table in 2B to guarantee their promotion.

Sunday's Well suffered a narrow loss to City of Derry at Irish Independent Park back in September but got the better of City in the more recent meeting between the two teams at Judges Road in March.

“We played them at the start of the season in our second game and they beat us 21-18”, said Head Coach Robbie Doyle. “We met them again a month ago up in Derry and won that 11-8 so there’s not much between the sides.

“We are well prepared for the match and are travelling with a full strength side so we’re pretty confident”, he continued.

“It’s really all about whoever gets it right on the day but I suppose from Derry’s point of view, they were topping the league all along until Highfield racked up 21 points in injury time against Bective to take the title, so maybe they would consider themselves a bit unlucky.”

Seeking promotion for the second year in a row Doyle said the support for Sunday’s Well this season has been phenomenal and a home play-off final would be a huge advantage.

“If we win tomorrow and Skerries beat Greystones the play-off final will take place in Dublin however, should Greystones overcome Skerries the final will be in Cork.

“Promotion to 2A is our goal”, he confirmed. “At the start of the season we set out to finish top four and from there to go up a division.

“Winning the play-offs would be a massive boost for the club from underage right up”, he stressed. “We got promoted last season and hopefully we can do it again this year.”
