Thomond Park Double Header On Sunday
24th April 2015 By Munster Rugby
Thomond Park will host two North Munster finals on Sunday. First up is the Carroll Plate final as Kilfeacle and District take on St. Mary’s at 2pm with Shannon facing Thomond at 4pm in the Webb Cup final.
Both competitions take place annually between the second XV of junior clubs and the third XV of senior clubs in the North Munster area and have been fiercely contested down through the years.
This year will be the 44th running of the much sought-after Webb Cup. The trophy was donated by the Webb Family in 1972 in memory of Sean Webb who died at a tragically young age a few years before.
The Webb family have strong links to the UL Bohemian club since the 1960s. Fittingly, the first winners of the trophy were Bohemians who defeated Young Munster in that first final and thereafter the competition became one of the most keenly contested trophies in the North Munster region. Two of Sean Webb’s brothers, Pat and the late Mickey, were on that first Bohemian winning team.
The Carroll Plate is a competition played in memory of the late Brendan Carroll from Bruff RFC. Carroll was an outstanding player in the early years of the club and is a former club captain, first team manager and club Treasurer. His four sons all played with Bruff RFC, his eldest son John is currently the club Treasurer and coach of the U-20s and wife Lena is the vice-president of the club.
The Carroll Plate has been running for over 20 years and this is the first year that the final has been held outside of Bruff.
