3rd September 2011 By Munster Rugby
Shannon and Young Munster will contest this season’s Limerick Charity Cup final in what will be a repeat of last year’s thrilling decider after both sides won their semi final encounters on Friday evening, while Highfield caused an upset in Midleton to reach the Cork Charity Cup decider.
Holders Young Munster defeated Thomond 42-3 at Clifford Park. Tries by Declan Browne, Sean Duggan and Shane Hassett and a conversion and penalty by Willie Staunton had the home side 20-3 ahead at half time. Wayne Murphy kicked a penalty for Thomond and added another early in the second half. Two tries from Darragh O’Neill and one from James O’Neill, plus two conversions and a penalty by Staunton saw “The Cookies” through to the final.
Shannon defeated U.L. Bohemian 25-14 at Annacotty to book their place in the final. The visitors led 11-0 at half time with a try from Mossie Lawler and two penalties by Tadgh Bennett. Shannon went 25-0 up with two tries from Luke O’Dea both of which Bennett converted. U.L. rallied in the final quarter and Tom Goggin and Rory Cunningham scored tries and Ed Torrie converted both.
Highfield caused a surprise at the Towns Park with a 14-11 win over Midleton to reach the final of the Cork Charity Cup Final. The visitors led 14-3 at half time with tries from Michael Dillane and Mark O’Driscoll with Ricky Jacobs converting both. Peter Brougham replied with a penalty for Midleton. The East Cork side closed the gap with a try from Rob Smyth and a second penalty by Brougham but the home side will rue the numerous missed penalty chances.
Highfield will now face either Dolphin or Cashel in the decider.
