This season saw a new format implemented with a round-robin pool stage taking place in August and September with the four pool winners advancing to the semi-finals.

Although Garryowen lost to Young Munster, they topped their pool thanks to bonus-point wins over Cashel and UCC. This led to a semi-final meeting with Bruff with the Light Blues beating their County Limerick opposition 39-10.

Cork Constitution meanwhile secured three bonus-point wins over Highfield, Nenagh Ormond and Shannon before beating Old Crescent 48-10 in the semi-final.
