Tierney Relishing Ireland Women’s Role

Newly-appointed Ireland Women’s head coach Tom Tierney is thrilled with the opportunity to continue the progress made in the women’s game in Ireland.

Former Munster and Ireland scrum-half Tierney will join the women's set-up ahead of next year's Six Nations and combine the position with his role as head coach of Cork Con.

The appointment is part of some recently-announced changes to the Irish Women's coaching structure with full details here.

Speaking about his new role, Tierney said: "I’m looking forward to it immensely. From a personal point of view it’s another step in my career – it’s a huge job.

"Two years ago they won the Six Nations and produced a superb World Cup performance in the summer, getting to the semi-finals and beating New Zealand along the way.

"I’m well aware of the quality that the Irish Women’s team possess. It’s a great honour for me and it’s a great challenge. I hope to build on the superb foundations that are already in place and hopefully I can add value to an already great set-up and I can’t wait to get started."

Tierney faces a hectic build-up to the Six Nations as he combines both head coach roles but it’s challenge that he relishes.

“It’s going to be hard work but that’s the job I’m in and that's the job I love and I’m looking forward to it immensely,” Tierney said.

"It’s something that I’m prepared to do and, thankfully, with schedules not clashing everything is do-able.

"I know exactly what I have to do from a club point of view and an international point of view. I’m looking forward to both challenges immensely and I’m ready to give 100% to all causes. Hopefully it will go well on all fronts and that’s the challenge but it’s also the carrot at the end of it that we’re successful on all fronts," he added.
