Transfield Cup Final Derby Set For Markets Field
25th January 2019 By The Editor
The Markets Field will stage the Transfield Cup final between last year’s winners Newcastlewest RFC and their neighbours Abbeyfeale RFC this Sunday, 27 January, kick-off 2.30pm.
This famous trophy was presented by T. C Transfield, a proprietor of a circus in O’Connell Avenue, Limerick in 1895. It is the second oldest trophy in Munster.
A total of 12 teams entered the competition. On their way to the final, Newcastlewest defeated Young Munster, St. Mary’s and Richmond in an effort to win the Trophy for a fourth time.
Abbeyfeale, who hold a distinguished record have yet to win the trophy, and on their way to the final the squad defeated Shannon and St. Senan’s.
The Transfield Cup final will take place at Markets Field, an iconic setting for the first Junior 1 competition and North Munster final held there for over 75 years.
A good attendance is expected for a close encounter between two clubs from West Limerick.
