Ulster Bank League Round-Up

Cork Constitution recorded their first win of the campaign as both Dolphin and Young Munster lost away to Dublin opposition in Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League.

Darragh Lyons captained the Con’ side as they defeated Ballynahinch 23-16. A try by Rob Jermyn and a conversion and penalty by Lyons gave the home side a 10-point lead after 12 minutes. A penalty by Richard Reaney for the visitors left the score 10-3 at half time.

A Stephen McCauley try closed the gap early in the second half before Con’ hit back with an excellent try by Tomás Quinlan which Lyons converted.

A penalty by Lyons 10 minutes from time made it 20-8, before a try by Kyle McCaul closed the gap.

Quinlan kicked a penalty two minutes from time but a Reaney penalty in injury time earned the visitors a losing bonus point.

UCD bounced back after their defeat by Young Munster last week with a 32 -12 win over Dolphin at Belfield. James Rochford and Brian Quill scored tries for the Cork side and Rory Scannell kicked a conversion.

Young Munster
were no match for leaders Terenure who won 42-0 at Lakelands Park.

In a closely contested tie at the top of Division 1B, Galwegians defeated U.L. Bohemian 13-10 with an injury time penalty from Ciaran Gaffney.

The sides were level 7-7 at half time with Ed Kelly scoring a try for the Limerick side and Shane Airey converting.

Airey kicked a penalty early in the second half to level the tie 10-10 and then missed an effort on 67 minutes before Gaffney’s late strike.

Shannon are still looking for their first win after they lost 27-17 to Buccaneers at Coonagh.

When Tadgh Bennett stepped up to take a last minute penalty it seemed as if Shannon would grab a losing bonus point against the odds after being 5-27 in arrears after 52 minutes.

Bennett, who has won so many games for Shannon, failed on this occasion but there could be little doubt that the best team won.

Shannon also went close, twice, to getting what would have been a four-try bonus but their day was summed up early on when Greg O'Shea had a foot in touch when about to score his second try.

Buccs led 20-5 at half time with O’Shea scoring Shannon’s try.

The Parish side rallied with a 57th minute try by John Shine and substitute Liam Cronin had another after 67 minutes but try as they might they could not manage another score.

Garryowen came from behind to beat Corinthians 23-18 at Dooradoyle with Jamie Gavin (pictured) scoring 13 of their points with the boot.

A try by JP Cooney and a conversion and penalty by Gavin had Garryowen 10-5 ahead at half time after trailing to an early try by the visitors.

A try by James McInerney and a conversion and two penalties by Gavin earned Garryowen their second win of the campaign.

Nenagh Ormond’s 8-6 win over Thomond on Friday night sees the Tipperary side in third place a point behind the leaders in Division 2A.

After a heavy defeat away to Naas last week, UCC recorded a 24-16 bonus point home win over Bective Rangers at the Mardyke. Killian Ansboro scored two tries for the students, Edward Earle got one and they were also awarded a penalty try, Ben Nugent and Kevin Kidney each kicked a conversion.

Cashel recorded a 20-15 home win over Naas.

Three penalties from Paul Daly helped Midleton to beat Sligo 9-3 and move into third place in Division 2B.

Kanturk playing their first home game in the Ulster Bank League defeated Boyne 35-10. Kealan Buckley scored two tries for the winners as John O’Sullivan and Michael Cronin got one each. Mark Healy converted three of the tries and also added three penalties.

Highfield defeated Old Crescent 30-13 at Woodleigh Park. The winners had the bonus point wrapped up by half-time with tries from Dave Kelly, Timmy Ryan, Conor Forde and Paddy Murphy with Paddy O’Toole kicking two penalties and two conversions. Kevin Doyle replied with a try for Old Crescent and Shane O’Brien kicked a conversion and two penalties.

A try by Willie McCarthy and a conversion and two penalties by Shane O’Riordan were not enough for Sunday’s Well who lost 27-13 at home to Tullamore.

Richmond lost 43-7 away to DLSP.
