Ulster Bank League Roundup

Shannon and Young Munster continued their challenge for honours in Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League with victories.

Shannon 18, St. Mary’s College 11.

Shannon kept up their challenge for honours in the Ulster Bank League with an impressive victory over St. Mary’s College at Thomond Park to share top spot with Clontarf. Garret Quinn-McDonagh kicked five penalties for the home side and David O’Donovan added a drop goal.

Blackrock College 13, Young Munster 37.

Young Munster maintained their challenge by collecting maximum points from their trip to Stradbrook. In a closely fought opening half the visitors pulled away in the second half. Darragh O’Neill scored two tries for “The Cookies” and Matt Costelloe and Ray Moloney got one each. Willie Staunton kicked four conversions, two penalties and a drop goal.

Garryowen 6, Clontarf 9.

Clontarf remain in top spot on points difference after their 9-6 away win at Dooradoyle. Former Cork Constitution player Richard Lane kicked three penalties to put the Dubliners 9-0 ahead after thirty minutes, Garryowen replied with two penalties from Declan Cusack either side of half time.

U.C.C. 9, U.L. Bohemian 19.

U.L. Bohemian proved too strong for U.C.C. at the Mardyke with their second successive victory of the campaign in Division 1B. A try from Darren Moroney and a conversion and penalty by JJ Hanrahan gave U.L. a 10-0 interval lead. Brian Kingston brought the Cork students back into contention with three penalties but three further penalties from Hanrahan secured the points for the visitors.

Bruff 28, Ballymena 34.

Bruff had to settle for a second losing bonus point after their defeat by Ballymena at Kilballyowen Park. Tries from M Cosgrave, John Carroll and Ray Moloney and two conversions and three penalties by Brian Carroll were the home side’s scorers.

City of Derry 19, Old Crescent 26.

Old Crescent remain unbeaten in Division 2A after their deserved away victory over City of Derry. Barry Gibbons scored two tries for the Limerick side and Tom Cregan added a try, conversion, drop goal and two penalties.

Thomond 19, Instonians 12.

Thomond recorded their first victory with a win over struggling Instonians at Fitzgerald Park. Daragh Hartery scored a try for the home side and Ger Finucane kicked a conversion and four penalties.

Old Wesley 45, Midleton 10.

Midleton are still searching for their first victory after a heavy defeat at Donnybrook against Old Wesley. David Smyth scored a try for Midleton and Jeff Hitchmough converted. Peter Brougham added a penalty.

DLSP 38, Clonakilty 21

Leaders DLSP proved too strong for bottom side Clonakilty at Kirwan Park. Mark Purcell and Kieran Howlin scored tries for Clonakilty and Matt Kirby kicked a conversion, drop goal and two penalties.

Cashel 20, Highfield 0

Cashel have moved to the top of Division 2B with a deserved victory over unbeaten Highfield at the Spafield. Cashel led 12-0 at half time with four penalties from Daragh O’Brien kicked four penalties and added a fifth early in the second half. Kevin Quinlan added a try to secure the points for the Tipperary side.

Sligo 5, Nenagh Ormond 9

Nenagh Ormond are just two points behind the leaders after their away win over last season’s Connacht Junior League champions. Donal Fogarty kicked three penalties for the winners.

Sunday’s Well 10, Wanderers 8.

Sunday’s Well had to endure some anxious moments at Musgrave Park before defeating bottom side Wanderers. A Shane O’Riordan penalty gave the home side a 3-0 interval lead. Daniel Horgan extended their advantage with a try which O’Riordan converted. Having been on top in the scrums the game went to uncontested scrums and a late rally nearly snatched victory for the Dublin side.
