Ulster Bank League Roundup

Shannon caused a surprise at Temple Hill with a 14-10 victory over Cork Constitution in the top game in Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League:

Cork Constitution 10, Shannon 14
A second win for Shannon over Cork opposition this season after their trip to Temple Hill saw them make it two wins out of two.
Brian Hayes put Con’ in front with a try after twenty five minutes and Gerry Hurley converted. Gareth Quinn-McDonagh replied with a penalty for Shannon shortly after.
Four minutes into the second half Luke O’Dea got in for a Shannon try. A drop goal by Mossie Lawlor and a second penalty by Quinn-McDonagh had Shannon seven points in front entering the final quarter.
Hurley kicked a penalty for the home side to keep them in touch.

Clontarf 16, Young Munster 15.
Clontarf share top spot with Shannon after a hard earned victory over Young Munster at Castle Avenue.
This was a battle of the kickers with former Cork Constitution player Richard Lane kicking three penalties for the winners and converting a penalty try. Willie Staunton replied with five for the Limerick side but was off target with a very difficult effort in the final minute from long range into the strong wind.

Dolphin 17, Blackrock College 10
A victory for Dolphin at Musgrave Park as they came from behind to defeat Blackrock.
Andrew Lethem put Blackrock ahead with a try after ten minutes and Darragh Fitzpatrick converted.
Barry Keeshan replied with a drop goal and converted a try from Kevin Brophy to leave it 10-7 to Dolphin at half time.
Midway through the second half Cian Bohane scored a second try for the home side and Keeshan converted. Fitzpatrick added a penalty to secure a losing bonus point for the visitors.

Old Belvedere 25, Garryowen 30.
A second defeat for the defending champions against Limerick opposition when Garryowen travelled to Anglesea Road and came away with their first victory of the campaign after last week’s home defeat.
The visitors trailed 11-9 at half time with Declan Cusack kicking three penalties for the Light Blues. Garryowen blitzed the home side early in the second half with tries from Cusack, Alan Geoghegan and Conan Doyle with Cusack converting all three.

U.L. Bohemian 12, Dungannon 5
U.L. Bohemian put a stop to Dungannon’s great start at Annacotty. The home side had to thank the boot of JJ Hanrahan who kicked four penalties.
Bruff 21, Galwegians 12;
Bruff bounced back after last week’s defeat with a home victory over Galwegians.
Wing forward John Shine was the home side’s hero scoring a try in each half. Tony Cahill kicked three penalties and Brian Cahill added a conversion.

UCD 23, UCC 16.
UCD came out on top in this Colleges clash at Belfield. Two superb tries’ by UCD’s Sam Coughlan-Murray proved the difference. The Cork students hung in there and a try by Brian O’Callaghan and two penalties by Brian Kingston saw them go home with a losing bonus point.

Old Crescent 12, Midleton 6.
Old Crescent remain undefeated after two games in Division 2A after they defeated Midleton 12-6 at Rosbrien. Tom Cregan kicked four penalties for the home side and Peter Brougham replied with two for the visitors.

Thomond 9, Old Wesley 9;
It was a share of the spoils at Fitzgerald Park as Thomond and Old Wesley drew 9-9. Wayne Murphy kicked three penalties for the home side.

Clonakilty 7, Queen’s University 30;
Another defeat for Clonakilty at home to Queen’s. The West Cork side trailed 8-7 at half time with a try by Mark Purcell and a conversion by Matt Kirby.
It was only in the final quarter that the Belfast students secured victory and the bonus point with some late tries.

Highfield 11, Sunday’s Well 6.
Highfield deserved this victory at Woodleigh Park in this Division 2B clash, as they had to withstand a late rally from the ‘Well in the final ten minutes as they were camped on their line for the final ten minutes but a solid home defence held out.
Shane O’Riordan gave the visitors a 3-0 interval lead with a penalty. Highfield responded early in the second half with two penalties from Ricki Jacobs and a try by John Sheehan.
O’Riordan kicked a second penalty for the Well fifteen minutes from time.

Cashel 16, Banbridge 12.
Cashel won their first ever home All Ireland league game with this victory at the Spafield. Ed Leamy scored a try and Darragh O’Brien kicked four penalties.

Nenagh Ormond 18, Rainey Old Boys 18.
High flying Rainey were held to a draw at Ormond Park as Nenagh held them to an 18-18 draw.
