Ulster Bank League Roundup

Young Munster’s shock win away to Old Belvedere has sent Cork Constitution back to the top of Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League.

Young Munster kept their hopes of an All Ireland League place alive with an excellent kicking display by Alan Kingsley. He kicked “The Cookies” ahead with a penalty after five minutes but they found themselves behind 7-3 after a try by Belvo’s Alan Trenier which Conal Keane converted. Kingsley kicked penalties either side of half time to restore the visitors advantage. A try by Stewart Maguire looked like giving the leaders the points. Kingsley completed the scoring when he converted a try by Brendan Guilfoyle.

Cork Constitution defeated Shannon 17-0 at Temple Hill to regain top spot. Brendan Cutriss scored a try after five minutes which Gerry Hurley converted left the home side 7-0 in front at half time.
Hurley increased Constitution’s advantage with a penalty fifteen minutes from time and minutes later Ivan Dineen intercepted and raced away to touch down and Hurley converted to make sure of the points for the home side.

A second half rally saw Blackrock College come from 15-3 down at half time to win by the narrowest of margins 21-20 against Garryowen at Dooradoyle and send the home side to the bottom of the table.
Declan Cusack and Ronan O’Mahony scored first half tries for the Limerick side and Cusack added a conversion and penalty. Blackrock took full advantage of the wind in the second half to secure the points. Garryowen’s only reply was a try by Lorcan Burke.

Dolphin’s recent run came to a halt at Templeville Road when they went down to St. Mary’s College 29-10.
The Cork side trialed 21-0 at the interval but a try by Christy Condon and a conversion and penalty by Barry Keeshan was not enough to earn them anything from this encounter.

A late try by Martin McPhail earned U.L. Bohemian an exciting 28-25 win over rivals Bruff at Annacotty in Division 1B.
The home side led 13-12 at half time with a try Darren Moroney and a conversion and two penalties by Ed Torrie to tries by Maurice O’Connell and Eoin Cahill and a Brian Cahill conversion.
Cian Aherne scored a third try for U.L. and Torrie kicked a conversion and penalty. Bruff hit back with a try by Brendan Deady which Tony Cahill converted and Brian Cahill added two penalties.

A surprise at the Mardyke as U.C.C. defeated a fancied Buccaneers side 19-13 to move further up the table and put a dent in the Connacht side’s automatic promotion hopes.
The home side led 14-5 at half time with two tries from full back Willie Walsh which Andrew Burke converted. John O’Brien replied with a try for the visitors.
Buccaneers came more into the game after the break with a second try from O’Brien and Jack Carty kicked a penalty.
John Ryan made sure of the points for the students with his side’s third try.

A late rally by Terenure College at the Towns Park nearly ended Midleton’s promotion hopes in Division 2 when a conversion by Mark O’Neill of a try by Robert Duke’s hit the upright and saw the home win 12-11.
A try in each half by Glen Deacon and a conversion by Jeff Hitchmough helped the home side into a top four spot.

Old Crescent eased their relegation worries with a 14-9 home win over Corinthians. A try by Ryan, drop goal and penalty by Fergal Lawlor and a D Fitzgerald penalty secured the points for the home side.

Clonakilty suffered a heavy defeat away to Dublin University going down 59-27. Joe Knowles, M Corclidaia and Noel O’Sullivan were try scorers for Clon’ and Denis McCarthy converted all three tries and added two penalties.

Thomond remain bottom of the table after their 50-15 away defeat by Queens University. Kevin O’Mahony, Derek Waters and David Foley scored tries for the Limerick side.

Nenagh Ormond and Sunday’s Well promotion hopes from Division 3 received a set back with home defeats.
Nenagh lost at home to Greystones 47-11. E Ryan scored a try for the Tipperary side and David Delaney kicked two penalties.

A last minute converted try denied Sunday’s Well the points at Musgrave Park as they went down to NUIM Barnhall 14-13. Michael Moynihan scored a try for the ‘Well and Danny O’Shea kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Highfield put up a great performance at home to Seapoint before going down 28-23. James Cronin scored two tries for the home side and Dave Walker one. Colin Mahoney kicked a conversion and two penalties.
