Upcoming fixtures

28th March 2017 By Leonard Allen

In a relatively quiet weekend there are a handful of rescheduled Ulster Bank All Ireland League games being played, together with games at the lower levels.

Sunday’s Well and Highfield get proceedings underway on Friday evening at Irish Independent Park. These sides were both promoted to Division 2A last season and have had contrasting fortunes since their 6-6 draw at Woodleigh Park on the Friday evening of the October Bank Holiday Weekend.

Sunday’s Well, who are hovering above the drop zone, will be looking to build on their valuable 32-17 triumph over Belfast Harlequins last time out as they aim to take another step closer to safety. Highfield will be looking to reclaim second place after slipping to third following their 36-24 defeat by Nenagh Ormond in North Tipperary.

On Saturday, Nenagh Ormond entertain Malone at New Ormond Park. The North Tipperary side will be looking to make the most of home advantage count in a bid to maintain their promotion challenge and avenge October’s 35-31 defeat when these sides met in Belfast.

In Division 2C, struggling Kanturk entertain Tullamore against whom they recorded a narrow 17-15 victory when these sides met in the Faithful County in October. Both sides are going into the contest on the back of home defeats with the Duhallow side losing 27-13 at home to second-placed Sligo and Tullamore, who are fourth, were defeated 22-18 by leaders Navan.

Midleton have slipped to seventh following their 42-16 defeat by Rainey Old Boys in Magherafelt. This week they welcome Bangor to East Cork, by whom they were defeated 32-23 at Upritchard Park.

The All Ireland Provincial Qualifying League series also gets underway this weekend.

Munster Junior League champions Clonmel begin their third successive campaign with a home tie against Connacht champions Ballina.

The Munster Junior League Division 3 Play-off final to determine which side is promoted to Division 2 with Mitchelstown sees Killorglin and Killarney locking horns in a Kingdom derby in Killorglin on Sunday.

Killorglin were early pacesetters and they were the only side to defeat Mitchelstown. This was in the second series of games in mid-October when the Mid Kerry side recorded a narrow 17-15 away win.

Killarney have already recorded two victories over their near neighbours this season. In January they recorded a 23-18 away victory over their neighbours in the semi-finals of the Martin O’Sullivan Cup.

On the final day of group games in Division 3, by which time Mitchelstown had their programme completed, recorded a 24-15 home win over Killorglin to end the Mid Kerry side’s unbeaten run.

At Junior 2 level, Gleeson League holders Garryowen take on Richmond in the decider at Grove Island. The winners will meet South Munster Junior 2 League champions Cork Constitution in the final of the Munster Junior 2 League.

Cork Constitution take on Highfield in the second semi-final of the South Munster Junior 2 Cup at Woodleigh Park, with Dolphin awaiting the winners in the decider.
