Upcoming Rugby Fixtures

A look ahead to the weekend rugby action taking place around the province.

On Sunday the respective Cup competitions across all three divisions of the Junior League are down for decision.

The Junior Clubs Challenge Cup is down to the quarter final stage with a big Tipperary derby at Clanwilliam Park when the home side face arch rivals Kilfeacle. Clanwilliam go into this tie boosted by that dramatic win over Clonmel last week thanks to Brian Kissane’s late penalty effort. With bragging rights at stake Kilfeacle may start as slight favourites to advance.

Cobh Pirates who caused the surprise of the day last week with that 12-10 win over Galbally have a home tie against Tralee. The Kerry side were pushed all the way by Kanturk last week and will have to show a big improvement if they are to book their semi final spot.

The other tie down for decision is the Richmond Thurles tie at Richmond Park and it is hard to see the Tipperary side causing an upset in this encounter.

There are six ties down for decision in the Junior Clubs Shield. The top game should be the meeting of Newcastle West and St. Mary’s at the West Limerick venue. The winners of this tie will be one of the favourites to lift the trophy and the home side may edge it by a narrow margin.

Last season’s Division Three champions Presentation face a daunting task with a trip to Bandon. The visitors will have to be at their best if they are going to cause an upset.

The other promoted side Scariff have a home tie with Mallow and the visitors under the guidance of Robbie Doyle this season will be anxious to get off to a winning start.

Ballincollig will be anxious to start with a victory at home to Castleisland following their relegation from the top flight last season.

Both Kinsale and Youghal will be hoping for home wins over Muskerry and Ennis respectively.

The Martin O’Sullivan Cup opens on Saturday with Abbeyfeale entertaining Kilrush and the home side should book their place in the last eight.

The other four ties in the opening round go ahead on Sunday. Dunmanway back in Junior ranks this season face a long journey to Carrick-on-Suir and could cause a surprise with a victory.

Corca Dhuibhne boosted by their recent win over Tralee in the McElligott Cup should advance with a home win against Charleville.

Waterford City with home advantage should easily prove too strong for Bantry Bay and Dungarvan could make their trip to Killorglin a winning one.

There is also a full series of games in both the North and South Munster Seconds League. Clonmel host Galbally in the Mansergh Cup. The quarter finals of both the Dennehy and Muskerry Cup are down for decision and the North Munster Under 21 League also so gets under way with two games scheduled.
