Munster Rugby in conjunction with the CARA National Adapted Physical Activity Centre recently ran a ‘Special Schools Tag Rugby’ programme throughout the province.
The Xcessible Youth Sport Initiative is a three year national focused programme aimed at increasing the participation of children with disabilities in physical action and sport.
Overseen by Munster Rugby Community Rugby officer Euan Gee, a series of Tag Rugby blitz days took place in Thomond Park Stadium, Garryowen, Tralee, Old Christians, Ballincollig, Cashel, Ennis and Waterford City rugby clubs over a number of weeks.

Assisted by local sports partnerships and Munster club and school volunteers, the initiative was a great success and highlighted how sport and physical activity is accessible for all.
Officially launched by Minister Aodhán Ó Ríordáin he stated “The CARA Centre approached the IRFU to partner in this initiative due to the fact that they are currently investing significant time in developing a sustainable structure for people with disabilities to participate in their sport.
It is envisaged that this initiative will enhance IRFUs values on inclusivity as well as providing opportunities and awareness of inclusion in the sport at local level through a coordinated, resourced and supported initiative such as Special Schools Tag Rugby.”
Speaking on behalf of Munster Rugby Euan Gee said “This hugely positive partnership initiative has given children from special schools the opportunity to play rugby when it previously might not have been an option. Also, it has given clubs the chance to engage with the disability sector and perhaps see the benefits and requirements of having a disability rugby section in their clubs.
Munster Rugby would like to thank everyone involved in the planning and implementation of this overwhelmingly positive initiative."
